Law & Order SVU surprises fans with original VTuber character

Virtual streaming has now become a part of mainstream television. In a recent episode of Law & Order: SVU, the show featured a storyline centered around a VTuber – a virtual streamer – surprising many viewers.

This episode features Jaded_Ember, a well-known virtual streamer (played by April Deieso), who reveals a past assault to her followers. While the SVU team eventually links the crime to a problematic psychedelic therapy experiment, the show gained attention for its surprisingly realistic depiction of the VTubing world.

A custom avatar on network TV

Instead of using simple, cheap animation, NBC created a detailed, fully functional VTuber model for the show’s episode.

Viewers of the virtual streaming community were thrilled by the impressive visuals they saw on screen. The excitement peaked when artists SHATRA_399 and SomieStudio revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that they designed the model featured in the show.

I’m thrilled to share that my friend @SomieStudio and I created the Live2D model featured in a recent episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit! It was an amazing experience, and we’d love for you to check it out! #Live2d #VTuber #Live2dShowcase #lawandordersvu

Big ups to SVU for actually reaching out to artists instead of doing some shitty cgi or ai prompt
