Even long-running shows like Law & Order: SVU have to be careful with their spending. Ice-T explained his character, Sgt. Fin, hasn’t been in many episodes this season because the show couldn’t afford to keep both him and Kelli Giddish (who returned) full-time. He’s okay with the arrangement, saying the show plans to bring him in for episodes as needed. While he’s not leaving, he’s slightly concerned about the future of the show – or his character – going into season 28, but remains positive. Having been with the show for 27 years (second only to Mariska Hargitay), Ice-T is thankful for the opportunity and doesn’t want to say anything negative. The reduced role actually gives him time to pursue other projects, and he’s touched that fans have noticed and reacted to his absence. He jokingly wondered what it would be like if people didn’t even realize he was missing!
Kelli Giddish, who was a main cast member on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for 12 years before departing in 2022, has returned to the show several times. She recently came back again, and told Extra she was thrilled, saying the show feels fresh even in its 27th season. SUV is currently airing its 22-episode season, and with Giddish and Ice-T each appearing in about half of the episodes so far, there appears to be enough space for all the sergeants on the force.
