Latido Acquires Eva Libertad’s ‘Sorda,’ Adapted From the Director’s 2023 Goya-Nominated Short (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for stories that resonate deeply and challenge societal norms, I am genuinely intrigued by the upcoming Spanish feature “Sorda.” Having spent years immersing myself in cinema from around the globe, I can confidently say that Eva Libertad’s tale of love, motherhood, and communication is a breath of fresh air.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to announce that I, personally, have secured the rights for Spain’s Latido Films to produce “Sorda,” the feature film adaptation of Eva Libertad’s 2023 Spanish Academy Goya Award-nominated short. This highly anticipated production is set to captivate audiences soon!

“Sorda” – A Narrative of Angela, a Deaf Pregnant Woman, and Hector, Her Hearing Partner

Liberty penned and is overseeing the production of a follow-up film, which shares the same title as her 2023 short film featuring her sister, Miriam Garlo in the lead role. This movie has garnered a Spanish Academy Goya nomination and has been chosen by over 110 different film festivals, ultimately taking home more than 60 awards.

Libertad mentioned that a few years back, her sister started contemplating motherhood. They had many discussions about it, and she confided in Libertad her apprehensions, anxieties, and aspirations regarding motherhood in a world catering to the hearing. These heartfelt talks formed the central narrative of the short film ‘Sorda.’

Writing and directing the short film proved to be a deeply moving and enlightening process for me. As a screenwriter, this was my initial exploration into the theme of motherhood and deafness, which made me realize there was so much more to Angela’s narrative that needed to be shared. Additionally, I observed the powerful effect this story had on its audience, as they were taken aback by an unfamiliar reality that hadn’t been explored before,” she commented.

The movie “Sorda” features Garlo, a performer who dazzled in the initial short version. It also stars Álvaro Cervantes, a two-time Goya nominee known for his roles in “Adu” and “The Hanged Man,” as well as Elena Irureta, the 2024 San Sebastian Zinemira Award recipient, who has previously acted in “Patria.

Motivated by the acclaimed festival journey, the positive response from audiences, and its thoughtful portrayal of its theme, the Goya and Gaudi-winning producer Miriam Porté felt compelled to join the feature film adaptation. Co-producing the project is Nuria Muñoz Ortín, who was behind the short film’s production through Nexus CreaFilms, and Amalia Blanco from A Contracorriente Films, known for “La librería”.

The project “Sorda” has garnered positive responses at various residencies and workshops. During this time, Libertad collaborated with esteemed filmmakers such as director Icíar Bollaín (“I Am Nevenka”), Celia Rico (“Journey to a Mother’s Room”) and producer María Zamora (“Alcarràs”).
