Kathryn Hahn is playing Mary Todd Lincoln, but in a surprising new project. Larry David is marking the 150th anniversary of America with a comedy series called Nebbishy People’s History of the United States. Titled Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness (and intentionally avoiding the Oxford comma, because…America!), the show premieres on HBO June 26th. It will consist of seven episodes, each with four sketches. Barack Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, is behind the show, and Obama himself will appear in one of the sketches. Larry David, speaking at South by Southwest (SXSW) according to Variety, joked that he’s used to being in charge, and Obama is too. Unsurprisingly, the two reportedly butted heads over creative notes, which is typical of David’s working style.
Before the show even airs, David shared a clip about the famous V-J Day kiss photo, explaining how the event wasn’t consensual. The show will also feature sketches with Bill Hader and Kathryn Hahn playing Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, Jon Hamm and Sean Hayes as the Wright Brothers, and Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld portraying Lewis and Clark – you might want to brush up on that last one!
