Aaron Pierre, who plays a key role in the new HBO series Lanterns, recently gave fans an update on how filming is going and talked about what to expect from his character.
What is the Lanterns filming update from Aaron Pierre?
In a recent profile with Esquire, Pierre revealed that filming on Lanterns has wrapped.
Pierre described the project as massive and ambitious. He explained that fans have been eagerly awaiting it for a long time, and expressed his hope that the team delivers something everyone will be proud of and enjoy. He added that the team themselves are very proud and excited about what they’ve accomplished.
In the movie Lanterns, Pierre portrays John Stewart, a new member of the Green Lantern Corps. He’s paired with Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler), a seasoned Lantern nearing retirement, and together they investigate a murder in Nebraska that uncovers a hidden conspiracy.
The Green Lanterns are heroes who keep peace throughout the universe, and Pierre found similarities between himself and John Stewart, which helped him connect with the character.
Pierre shared his admiration for the Lantern Corps, explaining that while they are definitely heroes, what truly makes them special is their willingness to acknowledge their imperfections. He believes this makes them incredibly relatable. He often discussed this with the cast and crew during filming, and feels confident that even as a viewer, he’d connect with the characters. ‘I’d watch it and think, ‘These are people I recognize. They feel like real people I know,’ he explained, adding he feels this season truly captures that authenticity.
Pierre explained that the film is surprisingly relatable, making viewers think, ‘Maybe I could actually join the Green Lantern Corps if I knew how to apply.’ He believes this connection is wonderful and hopes it appeals to everyone, despite the intense training and huge responsibility involved.
The cast of Lanterns includes Kelly MacDonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Sherman Augustus, J. Alphonse Nicholson, Jason Ritter, Nathan Fillion, Chris Coy, and Paul Ben-Victor, alongside Pierre and Chandler.
Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King are developing ‘Lanterns’ for television. The show will be included in the new DC Universe created by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Lanterns will premiere in 2026 on HBO.
