Landman’s mysterious coyote has a sadder meaning than you think

In the last installments of Landman, Tommy acquires a new animal companion, which initially appears innocent. However, this coyote might signal ominous events in Taylor Sheridan’s dramatic series (be aware: there are potential spoilers!).

In Sheridan’s previous works, you can find a few instances where animals symbolize something deeper (like Kayce and the wolf in Yellowstone, right?). However, Landman could be the strongest hint yet of a foreshadowing event.

In Landman, Tommy experiences two significant instances with the creatures. The first incident happens at the conclusion of Episode 9, where he witnesses a neighbor gunning down a coyote, expressing his disapproval for the killing of domestic animals. Subsequently, in Episode 10’s closing scene, an injured and bloodied Tommy advises another creature, “It’s best you flee. Coyotes are hunted around here.

After the intense and explosive ending, there’s a peaceful pause, and the interpretation of the coyote might be deeper than expected. In fact, Billy Bob Thornton views it as a symbol representing death.

The coyote in Landman represents Tommy’s troubling future

In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Thornton explained the significance of the coyote in the final scene, suggesting it might foreshadow a darker and sorrowful fate for the character, the landman.

Thornton commented that the representation of the coyote held significance for him, as he had discussed this with Taylor. Initially, there were more lines written for the coyote scenes, but they decided these would be better off without dialogue because these moments symbolized Tommy gazing intently at the wild coyote.

As a devoted observer, I can’t help but feel a sense of foreboding when I lock eyes with that coyote. It seems to me, in those moments, as if it’s saying, “They’re approaching. They’re coming for me.” Or, “Are they coming for me? Is it me, the solitary figure on these plains, trying to evade danger at every turn? Or is the coyote a symbol of something more sinister, like a powerful and relentless force?

It seems to me that this moment is particularly significant for Tommy as he grapples with understanding his identity. He appears to be contemplating himself, and maybe even confronting the concept of mortality or death.

To be frank, the future seems quite challenging for me, Tommy. I narrowly escaped the brutal tactics of the cartel, but it appears that Gallino could pose another threat. Adding to my woes, my mentor and boss, Monty, is no more, placing a heavy responsibility on my shoulders that I’m not entirely comfortable with.

This, plus the coyote, could point to more troubles on the horizon.
