Season 2 of Landman is building towards an exciting finale, and this week’s episode set the stage for a dramatic conclusion. Existing conflicts are escalating, new issues are emerging, and all the characters are facing major challenges. Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know before the season ends.
Who Attacked Ariana & What’s Going To Happen To Cooper After Saving Her Explained

The most shocking moment of Landman season 2, episode 9 was a violent attack on Ariana. While working at the Patch Cafe, she was confronted by Johnny, who had previously sexually harassed her. He verbally abused her with racist slurs, falsely accused her of being an undocumented immigrant, and then began to sexually assault her after she defended herself.
As a longtime viewer, I was absolutely horrified by what happened with Johnny and Ariana. It became clear he’d been stewing over her defending herself against his unwanted advances in Season 2, Episode 3 – specifically, he was furious she’d hit him and gotten him kicked out of the Patch Cafe. Beyond that, his behavior showed a deeply prejudiced side. He confronted Ariana, and when she stood up to him again, he escalated to a terrifying sexual assault attempt. Thankfully, Cooper intervened and stopped him, but the whole thing was incredibly disturbing to watch.
The main question now is what will happen to Johnny after he attacked Ariana. While Cooper stepped in to protect her, he went too far, continuing to assault Johnny even after he was subdued, and even threatened to kill him. The incident was all caught on a security camera, and with Barney having already called the police, they will likely review the footage to determine what actions to take.
Cooper is likely to face legal trouble for supporting Ariana. While Johnny will be jailed for assault and attempted rape, Cooper could also be charged with assault and sued personally. There are two potential ways Cooper could avoid this: Tommy and Cami could use their influence and money to get the police to drop the charges, or Barney could secretly destroy the security footage to protect both Cooper and Ariana.
Cami Fired Tommy: His Role At M-Tex In Landman Season 2 Explained
Emerson Miller / Paramount+
A major event in the ninth episode of Landman season 2 was Cami’s decision to fire Tommy. During a party celebrating the new offshore natural gas rig, Cami explained to Tommy that she needed a leader for M-Tex who was willing to take risks – the kind of risks that had made Monty so successful. Because Tommy didn’t support the potentially risky offshore project, Cami removed him from his position as president of the company.
This decision puts Tommy in a difficult situation, and it’s unclear whether he’s still employed at M-Tex. It seems Cami likely only fired Tommy from his position as president, with plans to keep him on as vice president of operations and landman. While she may not approve of his aversion to gambling, she recognizes his exceptional skills as a landman, his ability to solve problems, and his extensive experience – far more than she has.
Ainsley’s Problem With Her Roommate & Her Future At TCU Explained
In the ninth episode of Landman season 2, Ainsley began her college experience at Texas Christian University. Her start wasn’t easy, largely because of her roommate, Paigyn. Paigyn and Ainsley clashed immediately, as they have very different personalities: Paigyn is liberal, non-binary, confident, and organized, which Ainsley finds incredibly irritating. Essentially, they’re complete opposites.
The core issue with Ainsley and Paigyn is that Ainsley is accustomed to having things her way and doesn’t handle it well when she doesn’t get what she wants. Rather than following her counselor’s suggestion to speak with Paigyn directly, Ainsley immediately called her mother for help. After just a few hours in the dorms, Angela intervened and took Ainsley to a fancy hotel, removing her from one of the few people who wasn’t impressed by her outgoing personality.
Ainsley’s time at TCU is now uncertain. Her mother, Angela, plans for Ainsley to live off-campus during her first year and for Angela herself to stay in Fort Worth to be close by. This arrangement will likely mean Ainsley remains overly dependent on her mother. It could also create problems for Angela and her husband, Tommy, especially since Tommy recently lost his job and will probably need to return to his previous work as a landman in Midlands.
Cooper’s Role At M-Tex Has Him Stepping On Toes Already
Emerson Miller / Paramount+
Before the trouble at the Patch Cafe, Cooper received a new assignment. Tommy tasked him with leading a drilling crew on the land he’d purchased previously. But when they arrived, the crew foreman, Boss, and the other workers questioned Cooper’s decisions and ability to lead. Cooper had to stand his ground and prove he was in charge, leading to a tense standoff with Boss.

A single failed well could lead to job losses for the entire crew and cost M-Tex millions. As season 2 of Landman comes to a close, Cooper’s future is very much up in the air.
