Landman Episode 4 recap: Oil busts, crushed hands, and painful pasts

As a seasoned viewer of Landman, I must say that Episode 4 was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride! The tension between Tommy and his ex-wife Angela, coupled with the high-stakes legal battle and the oilfield drama, had me on the edge of my seat.

In “Landman” Episode 4, titled ‘The Sting of Second Chances’, I found myself grappling with some deeply emotional family revelations as Tommy does. On the other hand, Angela’s journey in this episode revolves around her struggle to accept and deal with feelings of unhappiness that she’s been carrying within.

Previously, in Landman Episode 3, Tommy found himself in a precarious situation due to his involvement in understating the plane theft case. Monty was facing intense pressure to implicate their landman for the crime. Additionally, Tommy’s troublesome ex-spouse, Angela, had arrived, causing quite a stir with her heavy drinking and wild parties.

In the latest installment of Landman, Tommy confronts his court testimony. Will Rebecca lend her support, or will Tommy’s fate mirror that of the crashed aircraft?

Here’s a full Landman Episode 4 recap, with major spoilers ahead!

Tommy’s deposition goes ahead in Landman Episode 4

In Episode 4, Taylor Sheridan continues with a central theme: Ainsley and Angela’s sexuality causing discomfort among the men they interact with. Whilst Nate frets over the women working out in their semi-undressed state in the living room, Tommy is heading to his deposition regarding the stolen plane incident.

He’s being sued for not informing the authorities about the plane being stolen, which then led to the deaths of several people after a truck crashed into it while it was parked on the road for a drug drop.

In a remarkable display of legal prowess, Rebecca, M-TEX’s attorney, proves to be an invaluable asset. Swiftly countering the prosecution council during the meeting, she levels accusations against them for making sexist remarks and needlessly wasting everyone’s time. This is particularly evident when it comes to two key points: A) Tommy reporting the theft to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and B) the crash taking place on a private road where the truck should not have been traveling.

After tearing apart the opposition’s argument, she insists they yield the case, which they do unwillingly. Impressed by her method, Tommy extends an invitation for her to join him for a drink.

Tommy and Rebecca form a bond

Shortly after at the bar, Tommy and Rebecca’s dispute persisted as they engaged in a heated discussion concerning the ethical stance of a local sex worker. However, as Tommy elucidated his perspective on experiencing an “oil bust” in such a town – a situation where everyone loses all their possessions – Rebecca gradually empathized with him.

In the meantime, Ainsley and Angela, feeling restless, tried to enter the country club only to be denied due to a supposed “private function” (which seemed doubtful). Instead, they chose to cruise around and ended up at the exact bar where Tommy and Rebecca were already having drinks.

As Tommy shares with Rebecca the tale of Monty Miller’s rise to wealth, having started from a humble trailer park background, Angela, sitting at the bar, notices them. It’s evident that her motive is mischief-making.

Angela gets jealous

Angela and Ainsley make their way over, and not much time passes before Angela teases Rebecca by saying her name sounds like a superhero from Marvel comics, followed by an invitation for her to join them for an evening meal.

Simultaneously at the oil site, Cooper and his fresh team are diligently working into the night to prepare the well for the next day’s operation. Tragically, a mishap occurs when Antonio sustains a crushing injury on the machinery. Upon realizing this, Cooper and Manuel swiftly rush to assist him. Unfortunately, before they could extract him, Antonio loses consciousness.

Later, Cooper carefully lowers Antonio out of the well, and Dale quickly transports him to the hospital. As they have to complete the well before dawn, Cooper is assigned the responsibility of feeding the rope into the tree (which Antonio had been doing), a job he has not done before.

At the bar later on, Angela is sharing a heartwarming tale with Ainsley and Rebecca about when Tommy unexpectedly gifted her tickets to a George Strait concert. It’s a lovely recollection, yet the mood turns somber as she starts to tear up and shares that soon after, the markets collapsed during an oil crisis, leaving them completely penniless. “Let me emphasize,” she says, “that I truly mean .

In a moment of discomfort, Tommy finds a reason to depart from the table. As Angela weeps, Ainsley confides in Rebecca that Tommy isn’t fond of discussing the subject of the bust. Rebecca kindly proposes to chauffeur the women home.

Ainsley makes Tommy a promise

On the journey home, Rebecca questions Angela about why she seems jealous of Tommy even though they’re no longer married. Angela reacts defensively, reminding Rebecca that she could potentially be with her boyfriend, and there would be nothing Rebecca could do to stop it. Additionally, Angela tells Rebecca that Tommy requires turmoil to feel like a man, and Rebecca doesn’t fit his type.

Upon arriving home, Tommy finds Nate still awake, diligently handling settlements for Luis’ family to prevent a potential lawsuit. He also encounters Ainsley on the couch, upset with Angela. “She’s a coward,” Ainsley states, “The market collapses and she abandons you.” However, Tommy understands Angela’s situation and supports her. Nonetheless, Ainsley assures Tommy that she would never desert him, regardless of the market conditions.

Concerning Angela, he later heads to his room where she’s crying in bed. She admits to missing their marriage, but Tommy reminds her of the turbulent nature of their past relationship. While this might be accurate, Angela still declares that she intends to part ways with her current spouse. Following some persuasion and pleading from her side, Tommy ultimately consents to reconciling with her.

A new day, a new start

The following day, Ainsley ambles into the kitchen, startling Nate as she’s only partially dressed. Upon Tommy’s suggestion for some attire, she responds that the garments she packed were meant to charm her beau. (One might wonder why Sheridan continues to compose such scenes…)

When Angela appears and Ainsley realizes they’re reunited, her joy is palpable. Before Tommy departed for the well, there was an unusual family reunion among the three, which might be described as a bit dysfunctional.

It’s functioning perfectly now, and Boss informed Tommy that Cooper had done a great job in ensuring it was completed. Tommy shared over the phone with Monty that everything is running smoothly, then called his son to return home and meet his mom. However, Cooper isn’t as thrilled as Ainsley about their parents reconciling.

After Tommy departs, Cooper receives a call from Ariana, the widow of Elvio. Emotional, she requests his presence. Aware that it could lead to significant issues with her relatives, he agrees nonetheless.
