At work, the character portrayed by Billy Bob Thornton seldom experiences dull moments. His days are filled with covert discussions with drug dealers, losses of acquaintances, and frequent health scares when his daughter Ainsley gets involved in something.
In Landman, drawing inspiration from Christian Wallace’s ‘Boomtown’ podcast about the oil industry, the narrative primarily revolves around the genuine accounts of landmen. However, a significant departure from the usual may surprise fans of the series.
Landman fans are missing out on a lot of paperwork
2025 interview with Wallace in January indicates that while Tommy’s experiences had some real-life foundations, his professional journey deviated somewhat from what is usual for that particular occupation.
He pointed out that the job of a landman in our series is far more thrilling than what 99% of real-life landmen experience,” he clarified.
In part, the difference results from Tommy’s role as an amalgamation of sorts.
In simpler terms, “Billy’s character, Tommy, is quite versatile at M-Tex, taking on a variety of tasks that a typical landman might not handle. This flexibility allows us to depict a broad spectrum of the industry and its operations.
It was essential for Wallace and co-creator Taylor Sheridan that the variety of experiences be present. As he explains, “Tommy’s character needed to be able to engage in various activities,” or else, “he would have been on his computer searching for leases and handling regulatory compliance, which wouldn’t make for an interesting show.
Landman continues to draw a massive following, even with minimal documentation available. Don’t forget to tune in for the final episode airing on January 12, 2025 on Paramount+.
