Lamar Odom’s Excruciating Reunion With Khloé Kardashian Is a Test ‘The Kardashians’ Cannot Pass

The Kardashians,” a Hulu reality series that follows Kim, Khloé, Kourtney and their family, navigates a delicate balance. It strives to present an authentic portrayal of family life while ensuring the final product is as smooth as a ride in a Cybertruck through Calabasas. The show raises significant issues, only for them to be covered up by gloss, which has been the pattern since it replaced “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” on E!, running from 2007 to 2021. Initially, the series was a less serious attempt at a family sitcom. In the past, I’ve criticized these shows for not delving deep enough into the real-life struggles of the Kardashians. However, it seems that bypassing certain aspects can sometimes make for better television.

The sixth season of the show on Hulu started with its premiere on Feb. 6, featuring a two-part reunion between Khloé Kardashian and her former spouse Lamar Odom. This intense episode pushed the boundaries of reality television, offering an authentic and unresolved glimpse into their lives. As a viewer, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of regret for witnessing such a personal moment. In this new season, Khloé expresses her desire to leave behind past issues before her 40th birthday. A key aspect of this process involves resolving matters with Odom, the former NBA player whose relationship with Khloé, following a whirlwind romance, was showcased on “Keeping Up” and formed the basis for the spinoff “Khloé & Lamar.” In a calm, measured tone, speaking directly to the audience, Khloé shares that “Lamar was, and still is, the love of my life.

Following their 2009 wedding, Odom was known for his friendly and comforting demeanor in contrast to the cool environment; he even managed to bring out the best in Rob, who’s usually shy around cameras. However, after they separated in 2013, Odom faced challenges such as a DUI and a critical medical emergency due to an overdose at a Las Vegas brothel. Since then, he has made appearances on “Dancing With the Stars,” but remains largely out of the public eye. Khloé’s emotional confession to her long-time friend (and co-star) Malika Haqq, expressing her desire to give Odom back personal items she had kept, showcases her resilience and the enduring nature of their bond. The fact that this transfer of possessions is happening on camera suggests that for Khloé’s family, only what happens in front of the cameras feels truly authentic.

In the season premiere, the appearance of the ex-athlete sparks great anticipation, with Khloé discussing her interactions in the confessional as they await his arrival at Malika’s house. (He’s running thirty minutes behind when she remembers seeing him involved in activities that, in her opinion, were inappropriate during his recovery from the overdose, right before their separation.) It’s important to note that this doesn’t imply any negative character traits for Odom or suggest he’s been up to anything but recovering since then. When he eventually arrives, Odom appears shaky and noticeably anxious on camera, staring into space until Khloé assures him she won’t do or say anything frightening. She inquires about his nerves and perhaps justifiably questions him about their last encounter being a final goodbye. “He seems uneasy, he’s nervous, he’s sweating,” Khloé notes to the camera, wondering if Odom expects her to scold him.

Khloé’s reaction could very well be understandable, given the turmoil she faced in her marriage. She deserves her voice to be heard. However, the inclusion of Odom, who has re-entered the Kardashian universe to generate drama about how Khloé will respond to him, seems a bit insensitive. He serves as both the focus of the scene, taking the brunt of Khloé’s anger and past criticism, and the backdrop, allowing viewers to assess his current state. Yet, he is never portrayed with the same depth or humanity that Khloé is allowed to express. This is understandable since it isn’t his story being told.

In appreciation for getting his possessions back, Odom exclaimed to Khloé during the season premiere that “my wife is amazing”, to which she reacted with a composed “let’s take it easy.” And in the second episode of the season, Odom appeared more affectionate, seemingly attempting to recapture the past, as if he was aiming for a kind of NBA-inspired Gatsby. From an outside perspective, it seems that he is emotionally expressing regret for his past actions and expressing hope that he can change. He appears to be seeking reconciliation, but not quite ready for it yet. “This has been really awkward,” Khloé admits, before Odom mentions that he thought there would be awkwardness, but hoped she might give him a kiss. However, Khloé feels the need to remind him that they are no longer married in reality, something Odom does not seem to fully accept.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’d rephrase it like this:

Khloé and Odom appear to be going their separate ways, yet an anniversary cake with a heartfelt message seems to suggest otherwise. She finds the gesture sweet, but remains emotionally unaffected. However, this whole situation is just another swing on the pendulum of transparency for a show that’s been grappling to find its own balance. In the initial episodes of “The Kardashians,” the series felt more like a bland infomercial, focusing primarily on the family’s fashion and entertainment ventures.

In 2022, my review of “The Kardashians” was distorted by Kim to imply that I thought Khloé should have discussed her surrogacy journey more. However, it might have been a coincidence or a change in the plotting, but Season 3’s storyline in 2023, marked by a season-long dispute between Kim and Kourtney about who had the rights to an Italian vacation, was both intriguing and just the right amount of tension. It seems that Kim, for one example, has found it challenging to tackle the ongoing struggle of sharing four children with Kanye West on the show… simply because they share four children together. Moreover, such dramatic issues might be too much for this series to handle.

I understand that the show, despite its best intentions, might not be adaptable enough to handle the complexities of reintroducing a struggling Odom to set a benchmark for Khloé’s personal development. Their relationship, evidently genuine based on Khloé’s guarded and protective demeanor towards him, was indeed real. However, it seems compassionate to give Odom space to navigate his own journey post-divorce – a journey he may not yet acknowledge – away from the public eye.
