A Los Angeles Lakers fan is taking legal action against LeBron James, claiming he misled fans into thinking he was going to retire with his recent advertisement, ‘The Second Decision’.
LeBron James is starting his 23rd season playing professional basketball, giving fans many opportunities to watch him. But with each season, his legendary career is getting closer to ending.
Although LeBron James hasn’t announced his retirement or even hinted at it, many fans are already wondering when he’ll stop playing. This speculation increased when he announced he’d be making a big announcement called ‘The Second Decision’ on October 8th. This was a nod to his famous 2010 announcement, ‘The Decision,’ when he left the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat.
That initial clip turned out to be a preview for a Hennessy ad, but a Lakers fan named Alex Garcia didn’t wait for the news of LeBron James’ potential retirement. He’d already bought tickets to what he believed would be James’ last game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
LeBron’s ‘Second Decision’ ad prompts fan lawsuit
TMZ reports that a devoted Lakers fan is asking LeBron James to refund around $1,000 he spent on tickets, since LeBron has decided not to retire.
According to TMZ, Garcia is suing James in Los Angeles small claims court, alleging fraud and misrepresentation. He’s seeking $865.66 to cover the cost of two tickets he purchased.
“I wouldn’t have purchased it if he wasn’t going to retire. Plain and simple,” Garcia told TMZ.
Tickets to see his games have become much more expensive, especially when he’s expected to reach significant career achievements. This was clear when he broke the NBA’s all-time scoring record with the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2023.
According to ESPN, the commercial known as ‘The Second Decision’ caused ticket prices to jump for upcoming Lakers games. Specifically, tickets for the last home game of the season against the Utah Jazz increased from around $82 to at least $580.
We don’t know if anyone else bought tickets like Garcia did, but currently, he’s the only fan taking legal action against James.
