Kyrgyz Drama on Violence Against Women ‘Kurak’ Lands at Fire and Ice Media for Asian Sales at EFM (EXCLUSIVE)

Filipino media company, Fire and Ice Media, has secured Asian distribution rights for the impactful Kyrgyz drama titled “Kurak,” which addresses the issue of female violence. They are showcasing this movie to potential buyers at the European Film Market in Berlin.

The movie, currently undergoing post-production, marks a significant milestone as it’s the first France-Kyrgyzstan collaboration in twenty years. Notably, it is also the biggest Central Asian production yet, with the most number of countries involved.

Under the guidance of directors Erke Dzhumakmatova and Emil Atageldiev, the movie “Kurak” intertwines several stories that revolve around women who are victims of systematic abuse. Among them is a webcam model being threatened by corrupt law enforcement, a mother on a quest for justice following her daughter’s suicide after an assault by a politician’s son, and a journalist determined to bring these hidden crimes to light. The film lends credibility to its realistic portrayal by integrating real news clips.

The film’s creation made a strong start during the 2024 Cannes Film Festival’s Central Asian Collaborative Production Seminar, supported by CNC and the Eurasian Movie Bazaar.

The production, which is global in scale, takes place at Dzhumakmatova’s Studio Oymo in Kyrgyzstan. Notable contributors to this project hail from various countries: Kairat Birimkulov represents Switzerland’s KBP, Katerina Tarbo-Ignatenko stands for France and Serbia’s Spirito Libero, Pavel Feldman is involved from the Netherlands’ Human Films, and Alexandra Hoesdorff participates on behalf of Luxembourg’s Deal Productions.

Besides our team, we’ve got a few more producers on board: Milos Djukelic from Red Art Workshop in Serbia, Paolo Maria Spina from Revolver in Italy, and Johann Chapelan from Girelle Production in France. The cinematography is being taken care of by Erzhan Arakeev, while Svetlana Dubina is our production designer.

Fire and Ice Media’s CEO, Liza Diño, stated: “The film ‘Kurak’ is vital and impactful, offering a platform to voices that are rarely heard. It’s a privilege for Fire and Ice Media to handle its Asian distribution rights, ensuring this timely narrative finds its way to audiences who truly need to witness it.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to announce that my upcoming production has garnered support from esteemed institutions like Kyrgyzstan’s Department of Cinematography and the Central Swiss Film Specialist Group IFFG. This endorsement not only validates our vision but also promises an enriching cinematic experience for all movie-lovers out there!
