Kyle Mooney Apologizes For Using AI In The Music Video For His Anti-Tech Song

AI is rapidly becoming a part of everyday life. From answering questions like ChatGPT to causing debate in Hollywood – like the recent case of actress Tilly Norwood – artificial intelligence is making a big impact. Most recently, comedian Kyle Mooney, formerly of Saturday Night Live, released a video created with AI criticizing the growth of technology, and is now issuing an apology.

After leaving Saturday Night Live following its 47th season, comedian Shane Gillis had already gained recognition. He’s known for his awkward, unconventional humor and pushing boundaries. His new album, The Real Me, fits his style, even though he says it’s intentionally different.

That’s where the track “Digital Society” from this project and its AI-riddled video comes into play. While the single talks about how much screens have altered our every day, it’s an entirely artificial edit. He followed up the initial ‘viral’ debut with an apology post warning of the new advancement and the potential dangers associated with it:

Writing this is incredibly hard, but I need to address what’s happening. My recent video for “Digital Society” is getting a lot of attention, unfortunately because of a problem with the technology it uses. I want to sincerely apologize for that.

It’s difficult to say if this is as good as Kyle Mooney’s best work. His humor can be a bit subtle if you’re not already familiar with his style. However, it’s definitely got people talking online.

The Y2K creator then relayed more details about artificial intelligence and how his friend Riley convinced him to use the medium. And after utilizing it, Mooney admitted that he feels bad that opted for it even though the song is to guide people away from big tech technologies. He then shared that he’d rather make songs akin to his “Blue Car”and“Kid on the Range,”though he’ll keep the AI video up as a reminder to all:

I’ve decided to leave the Digital Society video up as a cautionary example. I also recommend sharing Riley’s video – along with some of my own, better-made videos – with your friends and family, so they can clearly see the contrast between good and bad approaches. The wider these videos are shared, the better we’ll understand the risks associated with the technology Riley is using.

As a big fan of Kyle Mooney, I honestly read his recent statement – where he said he’d try to improve and welcomes feedback – as a classic bit of Mooney-style humor. It just felt right, especially considering he and Beck Bennett have been diving into the world of podcasting, happily chatting about, well, pretty much anything, just like so many of the big names in Hollywood these days.

Whether this is a prank or not is unclear, but I’m curious to find out who Riley is. You can see the original post and a photo of him with a baby and an “I Voted” sticker for yourself here.

I was hoping this helped explain things if you’re not already familiar with Kyle Mooney! If it just made things more confusing, I apologize. Either way, it’s clear Mooney is a really creative guy who can take a simple idea and run with it. I especially loved seeing him on TV earlier this year for the SNL anniversary special – it was great to see him working with both current cast members and past favorites.

Okay, so it’s probably safe to say Kyle Mooney won’t be hosting or performing on Season 51, which is a bummer. But honestly, that whole AI-generated apology was pretty clever – maybe it’ll at least get him a quick appearance? I’m really hoping so! In the meantime, if you’re like me and love his SNL work, you can rewatch all his best moments from Studio 8H with a Peacock subscription.
