Individuals fortunate enough to have been touched by the extraordinary works of filmmaker David Lynch are expressing their grief at his passing at the age of 78. On social media, Lynch’s long-term collaborator and friend, actor Kyle MacLachlan, has paid tribute to the director of Mulholland Drive with a heartfelt message. Accompanying photos of them together over the years, MacLachlan wrote, “Forty-two years ago, inexplicably to me, David Lynch selected me from obscurity to star in his first and only high-budget movie. He saw something in me that I myself didn’t recognize. My entire career, indeed my life, is due to his vision.” MacLachlan is recalling Lynch’s adaptation of Dune, where he played Paul Atreides.
MacLachlan expresses his initial thoughts about Lynch, describing him as a mysterious, instinctive, and imaginative individual: “He seemed connected to something we all aspire to connect with.” MacLachlan recalls their collaboration on the 1986 film, “Blue Velvet,” and the TV series, “Twin Peaks,” as times when their bond grew stronger. He emotionally notes, “I’ve always found him to be the most genuinely vibrant person I’ve ever encountered.
David appeared harmoniously connected to the universe and his creativity, almost as if embodying an idealized human form. He didn’t seek answers, for he grasped that it is the quest for knowledge, the questions themselves, that shape our identities – they are our lifeblood.
As a movie connoisseur, I’ve lost not just an exceptional talent, but a cherished companion in David Lynch. Reminiscing about our times together, I recall his hearty welcome, the infectious grin, and that distinctive baritone voice of the Great Plains that echoed through his backyard. We shared conversations about the simple pleasures of life, the thrill of the unexpected, and the breathtaking beauty that surrounded us, all while sharing laughter. Our bond seemed to be woven from the very fabric of destiny, as we found in each other reflections of our best selves.
In Lynch’s cinematic universe, MacLachlan was often the embodiment of his alter ego – portraying characters like Jeffrey Beaumont in Blue Velvet and Agent Dale Cooper across various Twin Peaks projects. Alongside luminaries such as Sheryl Lee, Laura Dern, and the late Jack Nance, MacLachlan stands out as the actor most synonymous with Lynch’s artistic vision.
He expresses, “I’ll feel his absence more deeply than words can convey, and my heart can endure. My life was brighter with him in it, and now it feels less vibrant without him. David, you’ve left an indelible mark on me; I’ll always be ‘Yours, Kale.’ Thank you for everything.
Previously, the pair had collaborated in the 2017 series titled “Twin Peaks: The Return,” where Kyle MacLachlan once again took on the character of Agent Cooper, along with several alternate versions of that character such as doppelgängers and tulpas.
