Fans of Stanley Kubrick can now preorder the Criterion Collection release of *Eyes Wide Shut* with a 30% discount. This will be the first time the director’s final, often debated film is available on 4K Blu-ray, arriving November 25th. The 3-disc 4K Blu-ray edition is currently $35 (originally $50) on Amazon. A new Blu-ray version with 1080p resolution is also being released the same day and is discounted to $28.
Eyes Wide Shut is perhaps Stanley Kubrick’s most unusual film, and it definitely pushed boundaries with its sexual content when it was released in 1999. While some critics and viewers found it disturbing at the time, it’s now widely considered a masterpiece, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. This Criterion 4K release is only the second Kubrick film to be available in that format-Barry Lyndon was the first in July-but most of his other films are already available on 4K Blu-ray from other companies.
Eyes Wide Shut, inspired by Arthur Schnitzler’s story ‘Dream Story,’ explores the hidden desires, insecurities, and anxieties of a married couple, doctor Bill Harford (Tom Cruise) and his wife, Alice (Nicole Kidman). The film is set in a strangely unreal version of New York City.
Stanley Kubrick: The Criterion Collection
I’m so excited Criterion finally gave Eyes Wide Shut the 4K treatment – it’s only the second Kubrick film of theirs to get one, though you can find most of his movies in 4K from other companies. Speaking of which, I just saw that Amazon has Barry Lyndon, that amazing historical drama from 1975, on 4K Blu-ray for $31.64 – it used to be $50! It’s a three-hour movie, but seriously, it’s gorgeous to watch. The cinematography and costumes are just incredible – it even won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography!
Criterion is expected to release more of Stanley Kubrick’s films on 4K Blu-ray. They’ve offered Blu-ray versions of his work since 2017, starting with *Barry Lyndon*, and also have Blu-ray editions of films like *Dr. Strangelove* and *The Killing*.

Stanley Kubrick Books
As a huge Kubrick fan, I have to tell you about these amazing books from Taschen. They just released a massive two-volume set about *The Shining*, and it’s incredible! It’s a really deep dive into the making of the film, put together by J.W. Rinzler who clearly did a ton of research and interviews. Honestly, it feels like the *definitive* behind-the-scenes look at Kubrick’s most famous work. They also included a scrapbook with photos and documents I’ve never seen before! It’s a big commitment at $125, and almost 1,400 pages, but if you’re a fan like me, it’s totally worth it. I highly recommend checking it out.
If you’re looking for books about Stanley Kubrick, we suggest Taschen’s *The Stanley Kubrick Archives*, which comes in both a large-format and a more affordable, smaller edition for $21. While Taschen’s book about the making of *2001: A Space Odyssey* is currently unavailable, Michael Benson’s *Space Odyssey* (Simon & Schuster, 2018) is an excellent choice. For a biography, *Kubrick: An Odyssey*, published in 2024, is a well-regarded option.
