Kristen Stewart Is Renovating an Old Movie Palace in Los Angeles

Okay, seriously, Kristen Stewart is quickly becoming my new hero! I just read her interview with Architectural Digest about this amazing project she’s taking on – restoring the old Highland Theater in L.A. She said she didn’t even know she wanted to rescue a theater until she saw this place, and then she just went all-in! It sounds like she’s always been drawn to these beautiful, forgotten spaces and what stories they might hold. The theater closed down recently, but she’s planning a full renovation, and not just to show movies. She wants to create a real community hub – a place where people can meet, hang out, and just connect. She even called it an ‘antidote to corporate BS,’ which, honestly, YES! She wants to make moviegoing about more than just spending money, and build a space people actually crave. I’m so excited to see what she does with it!

While promoting her first film as a director, The Chronology of Water, Stewart has been outspoken about the need for change in Hollywood. In an interview with The New York Times, she described the industry as a deeply flawed system, saying it’s driven by profit and biased against women and people from marginalized groups. She wants to move away from focusing solely on a film’s financial success. She explained that her next project would ideally be made with no concern for profit—she’d even be happy if it didn’t make any money—and still be a critical success. She believes making movies shouldn’t be so difficult and is exploring ways to create films outside the traditional, capitalist model. Stewart sees the Highland Theater as a potential space to experiment with this new approach, and perhaps even host the premiere of a possible Twilight remake.
