Today, Krafton announced Project Windless, a new open-world action RPG based on the fantasy world of The Bird That Drinks Tears. The game’s first trailer was shown during Sony’s PlayStation State of Play event. This is the first time the single-player game, being developed by Krafton Montréal Studio, has been publicly revealed, offering a glimpse into its expansive world filled with mythology, conflict, and heroic figures.
A New Premium Open-World Action RPG
Project Windless is an open-world game where your choices matter. Set on a vast continent embroiled in conflict, the game combines a compelling story with challenging, skill-based combat and large-scale battles. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, it offers a non-linear experience where your actions, exploration, and interactions with different groups will influence alliances and the overall course of the war.
Set in the World of The Bird That Drinks Tears
As a big fan of Lee Yeong-do’s The Bird That Drinks Tears, I’m so excited about Project Windless! It’s built in that same incredible world, but it’s not a direct retelling of the books. Instead, it takes place about 1,500 years before the original story, during a time of myths and legends. That means anyone can jump in and enjoy it, even if they haven’t read the books, but it also adds a ton for those of us who are already familiar with the universe. The world is populated by four really cool intelligent races – Humans, Rekon, Nhaga, and Tokkebi – and each one has its own unique culture, struggles, and way of seeing things. It’s shaping up to be something special!
Play as the Hero King
In Project Windless, you play as the Hero King, a powerful warrior from the Rekon race. Rekons are large, bird-like humanoids famous for their incredible strength and fighting ability. Wielding two magical blades, the Hero King battles hordes of enemies, fights giant monsters, and commands armies in large-scale conflicts. By earning a reputation and building alliances, you’ll unite different groups and decide the fate of a new kingdom through your choices.
Large-Scale Battles Powered by Mass Technology
Project Windless is powered by Mass Technology, which allows for incredibly large-scale battles in real time, featuring thousands of soldiers and enormous creatures fighting across ever-changing environments.
Battles happen in real-time and are incredibly fast-paced, demanding skill and quick reflexes. You’re right in the thick of the action, fighting directly alongside many other units, rather than giving orders from afar. Success depends on both your combat skills and smart tactical choices, creating a thrilling experience where individual action impacts large-scale battles.
According to Patrik Méthé, Head of KRAFTON Montréal Studio and Creative Director, the team began by questioning what it truly means to embody a legendary character in a fantasy setting. Their answer was to give players genuine control – not just during battles, but over the entire course of the game’s wars, alliances, and historical narrative. Project Windless is designed around the principle that legends aren’t simply witnessed; they’re actively forged through player actions.
A Global Development Effort
Krafton Montréal Studio, Krafton’s main North American game development team, is leading the creation of Project Windless. They’re working closely with the team in Pangyo, South Korea, to combine top-tier Western game development skills with the rich storytelling and cultural details of Korean mythology.
First Developer Diary Now Available
Along with the new trailer, KRAFTON has published the first Developer Diary for Project Windless. The video gives a first look at the game’s overall vision, how its world is being built, and the team’s approach to development. You can watch it now on the official Project Windless YouTube channel.
Project Windless is a high-quality, story-driven game designed for one player only – there won’t be any online multiplayer or ongoing updates after release. It’s currently being developed for both computers and gaming consoles, and we’ll share more information about when you can play it soon.
