Korea Box Office: ‘Hitman 2’ Leads Lunar New Year Holiday as ‘Dark Nuns’ Slips

During the weekend of January 31st to February 2nd, the Lunar New Year celebrations significantly boosted the South Korean box office. “Hitman 2” claimed the number one position, while “Dark Nuns” saw a significant drop in viewings.

In the sequel titled “Hitman 2”, an action-comedy film, a significant earnings of approximately KRW4.1 billion ($2.8 million) were recorded, representing about 39.2% of the market share. The movie experienced a 6% increase in viewership, drawing in around 450,751 spectators. As a result, its overall total revenue now stands at approximately $12.9 million, as reported by Kobis, a tracking service run by the Korean Film Council.

In a twist, the horror-thriller “Dark Nuns” moved to the second spot this past weekend, earning $1.5 million and accounting for 21.8% of the market share. Compared to the previous week, it saw a significant drop of 60.1%, admitting 243,886 viewers. With these numbers, its overall earnings now amount to a total of $9.6 million.

In fifth position, “The Substance” experienced a comeback, boosting its earnings by 40% from the previous week to collect $248,220. This represented 3.4% of the total weekend market share. The film has now accumulated a total of $2.5 million.

Continuing down the list, “Pokémon the Movie AG: Mew and the Wave Hero Lucario” came in sixth place, earning $184,102 individually and accumulating a total of $885,000. On the other hand, “Pororo the Movie: Great Adventure Under the Sea” took seventh place with earnings of $88,768 per showing and a grand total of $2.2 million.
