Korea Box Office: ‘Hitman 2’ Leads Again as ‘Nocturnal’ Debuts in Third Place

Over the weekend of February 7-9, “Hitman 2” maintained its reign at the South Korean box office, albeit with a substantial drop in revenue, while the fresh film “Nocturnal” debuted in third position.

As a fan, I’m thrilled to share that “Hitman 2” held onto its number one spot, earning KRW1.93 billion ($1.3 million) according to Kobis, the Korean Film Council’s tracking service. The film claimed a substantial 27.8% of the market share, but it experienced a significant drop, with revenue diving by 52.9% and admissions plummeting by 55.3%. Over the weekend, a total of 201,556 viewers stepped into cinemas to watch it. Despite this decrease, the movie has amassed an impressive cumulative total of $15.04 million.

In the musical romance “Secret: Untold Melody,” it climbed to the second spot, generating $936,515, which accounted for approximately 19.6% of the market share. The film saw a modest drop of 9.7%, drawing in 138,241 viewers and boosting its overall earnings to $3.7 million.

The movie accounted for 13.% of the market share with a total of 94,267 ticket sales. Starring Ha Jung-woo as Min-tae, a reformed gangster, who finds his brother Seok-tae’s lifeless body and learns that Seok-tae’s wife, Moon-young (Yoo Da-in), has mysteriously vanished. As Min-tae delves into the mystery, he crosses paths with novelist Ho-ryeong (Kim Nam-gil), whose book shares a chilling resemblance to the circumstances surrounding his brother’s demise. Driven by the need for answers, Min-tae embarks on a tenacious hunt, unraveling a complex network of deceit that implicates his former criminal organization and the police.

The movie ‘Dark Nuns’ slipped down to the fourth spot this weekend, earning $561,228. However, it saw a significant drop of 64.2% compared to its earnings from the previous week. To date, it has amassed a total of $10.6 million.

Ranking fifth over the weekend, “The Substance” maintained a consistent performance, earning $208,369 and representing 4.4% of the total market share. To date, its total earnings have reached $2.9 million.

Moving lower on the list, “Harbin” suffered a significant drop of approximately 72.7%, bringing in $105,349 and slipping to sixth position. The movie has amassed a total of $32.2 million so far. In seventh place came “Pokémon the Movie AG: Mew and the Wave Hero Lucario,” earning $88,726 in its latest showing. Its overall earnings now stand at $1.02 million.

The restored director’s cut of Tarsem Singh’s 2006 cult favorite “The Fall,” premiered at Locarno last year, demonstrated the most sustained success in ticket sales this week, moving up to the eighth spot and grossing $93,311. This represents a substantial growth of 75.8% compared to the previous weekend. To date, the movie has accumulated a total of $835,636 in earnings.
