Over the weekend, the South Korean box office saw “Harbin” extending its reign at the top.
Based on data from Kobis, the tracking service run by the Korean Film Council, it’s clear that the movie “Harbin” held onto its top spot, earning an additional 3.02 billion KRW ($2 million) over the weekend. Although there was a significant decrease of 35.8% compared to the previous week, the film accounted for 37.5% of the market share with a total of 308,016 admissions. Set in 1909, several years after Korea became a Japanese colony, this action-thriller tells the story of freedom fighters who plan the daring assassination of Japan’s prime minister as part of their struggle for independence. To date, its total earnings have reached $27.1 million.
In my humble opinion as a movie critic, “The Firefighters” maintained its strong second position during the recent weekend box office, raking in $582,400 and attracting an audience of 88,817 viewers. This gripping South Korean drama has now amassed a staggering total of $23.6 million since its release.
Making its entrance in third place, “Forbidden Fairytale” kicked off with earnings of $418,860 and attracted 65,569 viewers upon its January 8 premiere. The movie tells the story of Dan-bi, who works as a member of the youth protection team during the day and secretly pursues her dream of being a writer at night. Following an accident involving the CEO of an adult novel publishing company, she is compelled to write explicit novels to clear her debts. Her steamy stories not only hold readers spellbound but also stir emotions in her coworker, Jung-seok, who has been grappling with personal problems. To date, the film has accumulated a total of $638,320 over five days.
In a recent box office update, the Korean animated movie “Pororo’s Great Undersea Adventure” reached the fourth spot, generating $334,000 from 56,149 ticket sales. To date, its total earnings stand at approximately $1.6 million. Meanwhile, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3″ made it to the top five with $337,000 in earnings from 54,159 admissions, bringing its cumulative gross to around $1.73 million.
Moving lower on the chart, “Bogota: The Land of Last Chance” garnered $221,000 for sixth position, marking a significant 67% decrease from the preceding weekend. In the 1990s, a 19-year-old named Kook-hee migrated to Bogotá with his family, seeking a better life only to find themselves struggling to make ends meet. Starting at the bottom rung, he persevered through hardships and eventually rose to control Bogotá’s black market, amassing a total of $2.5 million over time.
Finishing in seventh position, the animated film “Crayon Shin-chan: Our Dinosaur Diary” earned an additional $209,000, now totalling a box office revenue of $4.4 million.
Or, more informally:
In seventh place, the movie “Crayon Shin-chan’s Dinosaurs Adventure” made another $209,000, bringing its overall earnings to $4.4 million.
In the eighth spot, “The Lion King (Mufasa)” brought in $201,000, bringing its overall earnings to $5.4 million. “Wicked” came in ninth with an additional $208,000, pushing its total to $14.5 million. Lastly, “Moana 2” rounded out the top 10 by earning $159,000, increasing its earnings to $21.9 million.
