As a passionate gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tinge of frustration as I follow the ongoing saga of Hideo Kojima’s latest projects. Having grown up playing Metal Gear Solid and eagerly anticipating each new release from the enigmatic designer, I find myself caught in a peculiar predicament: the SAG-AFTRA strike has left a few of his upcoming titles, OD and Physint, hanging in limbo.

I remember vividly the excitement that surged through the gaming community when Kojima unveiled these tantalizing new projects – the prospect of working alongside industry greats like Sophia Lillis, Jordan Peele, and Norman Reedus was enough to send shivers down any gamer’s spine. Alas, the strike has put a damper on my anticipation, leaving me in a state of perpetual suspense as I wait for updates on these intriguing titles.

However, there is a glimmer of hope: Death Stranding 2 seems to be progressing smoothly, with the music production and ADR for the actors already underway. The thought of delving into another Kojima masterpiece, this time with the talents of Lea Seydoux, Elle Fanning, and Troy Baker, is enough to keep me going during these trying times.

In a strange twist of fate, it seems that the strike has spared Death Stranding 2 due to its pre-September 2023 development timeline. I can’t help but chuckle at the irony – just when we thought we were finally catching a break from delays and setbacks, another obstacle rears its head. Still, I remain optimistic that Kojima and his teams will find a way to navigate these challenges and deliver the games we’ve been waiting for.

In the meantime, as I patiently await updates on OD, Physint, and Death Stranding 2, I can’t help but ponder what other surprises Kojima has in store for us – perhaps a Death Stranding movie or even a Physint film? Only time will tell. Until then, I’ll keep my fingers crossed and bide my time, dreaming of the day when I can once again immerse myself in the captivating worlds that only Hideo Kojima can create.

As for a joke to lighten the mood: “I guess the strike has shown us that even game developers need to unionize sometimes – who knew AI could be so union-busting?

Hideo Kojima shared updates on his upcoming projects, including Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, OD, and Physint. Regarding OD and Physint, they have been affected by the SAG-AFTRA strike for video game voice actors that started in July 2024 and is still ongoing.

As a devoted follower, I’m sharing the latest updates from Hideo Kojima. For the game OD, in collaboration with Microsoft and Xbox, he shared that his team has been diligently “crafting the game” and undertook scanning initiatives for both environments and actors. Unfortunately, the scanning and filming for OD had to be halted due to a strike. Regarding Physint, published by Sony, Kojima mentioned that casting was put on hold because of the same industrial action. He expressed optimism, saying, “We eagerly anticipate resuming [in 2025].

Regarding Death Stranding 2, Kojima mentioned that they’ve begun to explore and construct the game. Additionally, he shared that his team has been engaged in composing and recording music, as well as providing additional dialogue recordings (ADR) for the actors.

Games developed before September 2023 are generally considered exempt from any strike action, with this exception also applying to games that continue to provide ongoing service. This is probably the reason why OD and Physint felt the impact, while Death Stranding 2 did not.

In the upcoming film titled OD, we can expect to see Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier as the stars. Jordan Peele, a renowned Oscar winner, will also contribute to the script. At present, the cast for Physint remains undetermined. Conversely, Death Stranding 2 boasts Norman Reedus, Lea Seydoux, Troy Baker, Elle Fanning, and other popular personalities on its roster.

The labor action commenced at 12:01 AM on July 26th. This is the initial time that SAG-AFTRA’s video game actors have taken such a stand since 2016, during which a work interruption persisted for approximately a year.

For approximately two years, SAG-AFTRA and major video game publishers such as Warner Bros., Activision, Disney, among others, held negotiations before the announcement of the strike. It seems that the main contentious issue is the control over artificial intelligence technology capable of generating content.

Apart from games, Kojima mentioned that arrangements and planning are being made for a Death Stranding movie along with other adaptations based on his games. When Physint was unveiled, Kojima also revealed a collaboration with Sony’s Columbia Pictures, suggesting that a Physint film might be in development too.

Kojima attended The Game Awards in December 2024, but had no announcements to share.
