KJ Apa’s Jimmy Stewart Voice Must Be Heard to Be Believed

The young actors from Riverdale really learned to fully embrace their roles, and that dedication is evident in the trailer for their new film, Jimmy. KJ Apa stars as Jimmy Stewart, portraying the actor and war hero after he wins an Oscar for The Philadelphia Story as World War II begins. Like many actors of that era – think Bette Davis – Stewart adopted distinctive vocal styles, and Apa seems eager to capture that aspect of his performance.

The trailer begins with Stewart playing a famous actor who decides he wants to join the military, but his celebrity status makes people hesitant. “Shouldn’t I have the same right to serve as anyone else?” he asks, speaking with a blend of American and his natural New Zealand accent. However, his unusual delivery—a sort of rushed, muffled speech where vowels sound bent—is more noticeable than the message itself. It’s difficult to concentrate on what he’s saying because how he’s saying it is so distracting.

Jimmy Stewart definitely had a unique voice, but when you listen closely, especially in a movie like The Philadelphia Story, he sounds less like speaking and more like gently purring his lines. Interestingly, some find that Apa sounds more like Katharine Hepburn – or even Cate Blanchett doing an impression of Hepburn. Even in a classic like It’s a Wonderful Life, George Bailey still sounds like a real person. What makes it even stranger is that everyone else in the film sounds completely natural. For example, Rob Riggle plays Colonel Terrill using his own, current voice. He delivers his lines – “America can’t afford to lose Jimmy Stewart” – sounding perfectly normal.

This movie is based on a real-life story. Contrary to some beliefs, Jimmy Stewart wasn’t turned down by the army because of his acting career, but due to being underweight, according to the Eisenhower Foundation. Aaron Burns is both directing and producing the film through his company, Burns & Co. It’s scheduled to be released in theaters on November 6, 2026, and hopefully, it will be a great movie.
