KitKat trucks get “presidental-level protection” after viral 12-ton chocolate heist

A large theft of KitKat bars, valued at thousands of dollars, recently caused a surprising internet sensation. The trucks carrying the stolen chocolate were given a high-security escort, making the incident particularly unusual.

In March, a large shipment of KitKat bars – over 12 tons, containing 413,793 individual bars – was stolen from a truck. The unusual size of the theft quickly spread online, turning a typical cargo crime into a popular news story.

Nestlé reacted by implementing a tracking system that uses the unique codes printed on every chocolate bar. If a stolen bar is scanned, the system alerts authorities and provides reporting instructions, allowing Nestlé to track its location.

But it’s the company’s next move that really took off online.

KitKat trucks go viral for insane levels of security

Recently, KitKat delivery trucks in Canada have been seen with extensive security details – including black SUVs – after a job posting appeared for security guards specializing in protecting valuable items.

The video spread rapidly online. One popular Instagram video, made by Shawn Molko, showed a group of vehicles gathered around a KitKat delivery truck in downtown Toronto.

He joked that KitKat was taking extreme security measures, calling it “presidential-level protection.” He speculated they either wanted to prevent further burglaries or were protecting someone famous, like Beyoncé, who might be inside the truck.

A similar video on TikTok gained hundreds of thousands of views, sparking debate among viewers about whether it was genuine or a performance.

One viewer said they now believe the whole thing was just for publicity. Another commented that whoever came up with the marketing idea deserved a big bonus.

They weren’t far off.

So, it turns out the whole KitKat convoy thing wasn’t some crazy random event! KitKat actually planned it as a marketing stunt. They saw all the buzz about that chocolate heist and decided to have some fun with it, working with an agency called Courage to turn it into a funny moment for everyone. I have to admit, it worked – it definitely got my attention!

Instead of using a lot of explanation, we focused on what feels naturally Canadian,” explained Joel Holtby, founder of Courage. “We simply had a KitKat delivery truck drive by, treated like it was carrying something incredibly important – no further explanation needed.

Despite the online humor surrounding the disappearance, the stolen chocolate hasn’t been found yet, and Nestlé is still working to locate the missing shipment.
