Kit Harrington was furious over fan petitions to remake Game of Thrones finale

Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, was very upset by online petitions calling for a complete redo of the show’s final season. He reportedly asked, “How dare you?”

The ending of HBO’s Game of Thrones disappointed many viewers. The show, once a massive cultural phenomenon that everyone was talking about, quickly lost its impact due to the backlash surrounding its final season.

Season 8, which aired in early 2019, received a lot of criticism for feeling rushed and for some disappointing story decisions at the end. It also had some noticeable mistakes, like the accidental appearance of a Starbucks cup in a scene.

Beyond just complaining online, some viewers were very upset with the show’s ending. They started a petition asking for the final episode to be rewritten by better writers, and it has already received over 1.8 million signatures. This backlash deeply angered one of the show’s lead actors.

“I was truly upset by that,” Harrington told the New York Times in 2026. “It felt incredibly disrespectful, and I’m not going to apologize for feeling that way.”

“I think it was a level of idiocy that can only come about through social media.”

Harrington was surprised and disappointed by the initial negative reactions to Season 8, considering the incredible work put in by everyone involved. He had recently finished rehab and believed the cast and crew had truly given their all, particularly on a massive battle sequence that took a full 55 days to shoot.

The final episode of Game of Thrones’ eighth season has the lowest rating of any episode on IMDB, with a score of 4 out of 10 based on nearly 280,000 viewer ratings.

Harrington previously explained that the story had reached its natural conclusion because the team was completely exhausted. He said they simply couldn’t have continued working any longer.

He acknowledged the story had some flaws and that certain creative decisions didn’t quite land, but he maintained he had no other option. He simply didn’t have the energy or ideas for another season.

It’s been seven years since the TV show finished, and George R.R. Martin still hasn’t completed the book series. He’s been working on other projects instead, including the video game Elden Ring, the new show House of the Dragon, and another upcoming series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
