The new Tubi original movie, , premiered on February 13th. Stars Paris Berelc (Flora) and Asher Angel (Sean) recently spoke with Ebaster about what attracted them to the project, how the original Wattpad story shaped the film, and their wishes for potential sequels.

Kissing is the Easy Part tells the story of Flora and Sean, an unlikely pair. Flora is effortlessly cool, while Sean is a dedicated student—a twist on the typical ‘bad boy falls for nerdy girl’ storyline. Things get interesting when Flora’s parents encourage Sean to actively pursue her, and a connection unexpectedly forms.

Both Angel and Berelc were excited about the movie partly because they got to work together, but they were also interested in the story itself.

I was really excited about Kissing is the Easy Part, especially because of Paris Berelc – I’ve been a fan since I was a kid! But it wasn’t just that. What stood out to me was that it wasn’t a typical romantic comedy. The dynamic between the characters is flipped – Sean is thrown off by Flora, but she’s totally comfortable around him, which you don’t often see. When I read the script, it felt different from the classic rom-coms I grew up with, like 10 Things I Hate About You, Clueless, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. We’re offering a fresh take on those movies, and that really grabbed my attention. Plus, working with Paris was amazing – she really made the project even better.

I was really excited about the project, especially getting to work with Asher Angel. We’ve known each other for a long time, so it was great to finally be in a movie together. But what really drew me in was Flora. She’s a really interesting character – she’s not just a typical popular girl; she’s complex and has a lot going on internally, even if she struggles to express herself. I loved the chemistry between Flora and Sean – they felt like a classic high school couple, something I always enjoyed watching growing up. And working with Fawzia Mirza was fantastic. I actually met her at a screening of her film, The Queen of My Dreams, and I was so impressed by both her and the movie that I immediately looked forward to filming with her. She was just amazing to work with.

Berelc and Angel also elaborated upon the uniqueness of this narrative.

We definitely drew inspiration from classic high school movies, but we wanted to update those tropes and make them feel fresh and fun. For example, the scene with Sean waiting at the stairs for Homecoming felt really special because it captured that iconic high school moment – it was just so cute and relatable.

Angel: And we never experienced that.

We missed out on a typical high school experience, but everyone involved did an amazing job of blending classic elements with a fresh, modern take.

Angel: Hell yeah.

The original Wattpad story played a key role in this production as well, the stars explained.

I was aware the book and movie weren’t exactly the same, but we were lucky enough to have the author, Christine Duann, visit the set. She shared that she’d written the book about ten years prior, and she was amazed to be there, witnessing it come to life as a movie.

Angel: Bringing it to life. That’s so cool.

As a movie reviewer, I have to say, what’s really neat about this project is its origin story. It started on Wattpad, which is amazing – a place where anyone can share their writing. And to build a readership of 32 million people? That’s incredible! It’s a fantastic feeling to know so many people loved the story before it even became a movie, and now we get to see it brought to life on the big screen.

Angel: And I feel like we did it justice.

We really wanted to honor the source material and make a movie that the fans would love, so we put a lot of effort into it.

Angel believes the people involved will be thrilled, but she doubts they’re prepared for the strong connection, excitement, and intensity between them.

Both actors were enthusiastic about making a sequel—or even multiple sequels—to the film, and one of them playfully suggested the title College is the Hard Part.

From the very beginning of filming, we all felt a special energy on set. It was just something we knew instinctively. We’re definitely going to keep focusing on that positive feeling and hoping it continues.

Regarding possible sequel storylines, the actors had a few ideas.

I’d be really interested to see how they navigate college life – balancing their studies, figuring out their future careers, and pursuing their personal goals, all while maintaining a relationship. It’s a big shift from high school to adulthood, and I think that change would be fascinating to watch. College is a time of huge growth and self-discovery, and I’m curious to see how they handle that transition and everything that comes with it.

Angel dreams of working at NASA someday, maybe even visiting me while I’m in college and helping build rockets. She jokes that the hardest part of being in space would be getting married!

The third movie will be about us living in space, specifically as the first people to colonize the moon.

I really like this idea! I think it would be amazing to see you in a cute, pink astronaut suit. I can totally visualize it!

Angel and Berelc wanted to drive home just how much love went into the movie, too.

Everyone put in a tremendous amount of effort, and we all really enjoyed ourselves. People often talk about cast and crew becoming like family, and that was absolutely true for us. It felt like a summer camp experience, and watching the final product, it’s clear how much fun we had and how much love and attention went into creating the movie and developing each character.

We put so much heart and soul into this project – a lot of hard work and emotion. I’m really excited for everyone to see the behind-the-scenes footage where we all got incredibly emotional and cried together. It was a deeply meaningful experience, and I know I’ll be moved to tears again when I watch it.

I was really emotional on our last day of filming – I cried like I’d lost someone! It was tough saying goodbye, but honestly, if you’re that upset when something ends, it means it was truly special.

Angel: I did not want to leave. We did not want to leave each other, everyone. It was beautiful.
