In Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, all I can see of a dead woman is a pair of pale feet – she died a very violent death. I’m asked to examine her body to figure out what happened, and as I look over her with Henry describing the details, a disturbing picture emerges. He notes her chest has been brutally cut, with large pieces of flesh cleanly removed, and I’m suddenly relieved that all I can see are her ashen feet. Then, my attention is drawn to a dark ring around her neck, suggesting she was strangled, and we realize whoever killed her must have had “awfully strong hands“.
While the victim’s body doesn’t offer many immediate answers, this helpful clue leads me on a complicated and unpredictable journey as I try to unravel a series of puzzling murders in Kuttenberg. This gruesome investigation kicks off The Fifth Commandment side quest, and it’s easily the most captivating and enjoyable questline I’ve experienced in Warhorse’s RPG to date.
I’m still thinking about this experience even two weeks later, and that really says something. It actually sparked a strong desire in me to become a proper medieval detective! I’ve even begun imagining a whole game filled with similar quests. Honestly, if Warhorse released another DLC with just more detective mysteries set in the city, I’d be as thrilled as Henry’s dog, Mutt, when he gets a tasty sausage.
Murder in medieval times
Wow, it seriously took me around 50 hours to finally get to Kuttenberg in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, and I have to admit, I was totally blown away when I first arrived. Up until then, I’d only explored those little, charming villages around Trosky, but this massive, walled city and the area around it felt like stepping into a completely different game. And honestly, it pretty much *is* a new world; Kuttenberg is located in a brand-new region that doesn’t become accessible until you get to a specific part of the story. It’s a huge change of pace! I wasn’t prepared!
The city felt incredibly alive, and I immediately loved wandering its cobblestone streets and taking in the impressive medieval scenery. There were so many taverns, merchants, interesting places, and side quests that I didn’t even know where to start. After exploring for a while, I realized I wasn’t making much progress with the main story, and with Capon getting into trouble again, I wanted to fix things. I made up my mind to focus on the main objectives as much as possible. However, I eventually reached a roadblock because of a fight that was too difficult for me, given my limited combat skills. It was frustrating, to say the least.
I hadn’t played in a while, but I came back just to try out the Legacy of the Forge DLC. I was really hoping to retire my sword and pick up a hammer and anvil! I was on my way to town to deliver a horseshoe I’d made – I’m pretty good at blacksmithing, you know – when I spotted a side quest in a tavern. I figured I’d just quickly check it out and add it to my quest log, then get back to fulfilling my commission. But then I realized who was giving the quest: Katherine! She’s a really interesting character I’ve run into before, and she wanted me to investigate a murder. That was it for me – I was completely hooked and there was no going back!
Honestly, there’s nothing I enjoy more than a bit of detective work. As a big fan of games like LA Noire, I’m constantly searching for similar experiences. Add a historical setting to the equation, and I’m completely in my element. So, after finishing up with the duties in the Legacy of the Forge DLC, I quickly became involved in a series of murders, allowing me to use my detective skills in a medieval world.
Death comes to Kuttenberg
This side quest has everything needed for a truly captivating story. Katherine is worried that a young woman’s violent death happened because she was working with Katherine as an informant. Concerned for her own safety and the safety of others, Henry is tasked with investigating the death to see if there’s any validity to her fears. However, what begins as an investigation into a single murder quickly expands into a case involving a serial killer as you uncover more victims who suffered the same tragic fate as the initial woman you investigate.
Talking to people connected to the victims, questioning suspects, carefully examining crime scenes, and even using a bloodhound named Mutt to follow the scent of clothing belonging to a missing-and feared deceased-woman, every part of this investigation feels like stepping into the shoes of a classic Sherlock Holmes. I’m relying on every skill and piece of knowledge I have to solve the mystery. There was one instance where all evidence led to a specific house, so I went undercover. I convinced the gatekeeper I was a simple healer there to examine the sick owner. I fully embraced the role, using my persuasive abilities, knowledge of alchemy, and other skills to succeed in checks and convince my patient that I was a legitimate expert.
After the homeowner and I get sidetracked, I slip away and break into a locked room to search for more clues. I won’t reveal how the mystery plays out, or who the criminal is-that’s what makes this storyline so captivating. However, I will say I really appreciate the number of misleading clues, and each new piece of evidence made me increasingly unsure if I was closing in on the correct suspect.
I nearly skipped this side quest because I was stuck on the main story, but I’m so happy the Legacy of the Forge DLC brought me back and led me to this murder mystery. Warhorse’s RPG is a fantastic setting for playing detective, and I hope I find another quest like this soon. For me, a great case is one that’s always surprising, and even though my feet were killing me, this one definitely kept me guessing.
