Kieran Culkin’s Tonight Show Audition Won Late Night This Week

a significant political event, a popular celebrity issue that captivates everyone, an alarming natural disaster occurrence, and an internet incident so absurd that it necessitates extensive discussion. Late-night TV shows are well-equipped to tackle at least three out of these four aspects, with climate collapse being the exception, although Jimmy Kimmel sending two LAFD firefighters to the Super Bowl comes close.

As a movie enthusiast, I’d say that two scenes encapsulate the mood of 2025 perfectly – the intersection of mundane and malevolent: one, an interview by Stephen Colbert with the current (or former) director of USAID; and two, Andy Cohen grilling Craig Conover about his breakup with Paige DeSorbo on WWHL. Both instances involve complex acronyms and are handled with the same level of seriousness. In 2025, who knows what’s right or wrong? But getting the USAID director on The Late Show was brilliant. That woman should be greeted with thunderous applause whenever she enters a room, given the challenges she’s faced this week. And here are some other individuals you might want to pay attention to, considering the challenging week we’ve all had.

Ariana Grande Plays Ball

Ariana Grande’s appearances on late-night shows are truly special moments. One of my favorite Christmas songs I still enjoy is her version of “Imagine” on The Tonight Show. Ariana’s talent shines even brighter in the late-night setting. However, during this Jimmy Kimmel Live! segment, they made a big deal about how small she is. But don’t let her petite size fool you – she’s got a big spirit and that needs to be recognized. She impressively improvised on songs she wasn’t familiar with, and kudos to the Jimmy Kimmel Live! team for incorporating an “It’s a Small World” reference, which shows they understand her Disney roots. After all, once a Disney fan, always a Disney fan.

“Keep Rubbing, Keep Rubbing. Don’t Slap It!”

My letter to CBS was responded to: More culinary segments on late-night television! Chef Daniel Boulud from Tete D’Or had an early Valentine’s Day segment on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, preparing prime rib and making tableside Caesar salads (my heart yearns for a tableside Caesar salad experience). Colbert, in a tailored suit, attempting to help out during the cooking process was already entertaining, but the subtle sexual undertones of marinating prime rib took this clip to another level. It’s no surprise that Colbert from Strangers With Candy found and emphasized every potential innuendo when preparing a roast.

John Hodgman Makes Demands on After Midnight

Around midnight, an extraordinary event took place – Jean Grae and John Hodgman were back together again. I guess they’ve had meals together since their co-hosting days on variety shows during the mid-2000s, but it was refreshing to see them work professionally side by side. The “Who’s Your Zaddy?” game perfectly showcased what makes their dynamic so appealing. Jean often challenges John by pointing out his whiteness and privilege, and John gladly takes on that role for the laughs. If playing a stodgy white character is the funniest option he can play, then John is more than happy to do it. And if the director of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” happens to be a stodgy white man, well, so be it!

Harrison Ford Is Down to Clown

In a different phrasing: Many believe Harrison Ford comes across as grouchy, but it’s essential to understand that Calista didn’t make him wear that green outfit. Instead, Ford embraces his grumpy persona just as much as any other character he has portrayed. However, let’s be clear – the grumpiness is a part of his acting roles and not an expression of his true self. In truth, Ford is having a great time with it all. The opening scene of this Jimmy Kimmel Live! clip finds Ford speaking directly to the camera, expressing his liking for Kimmel and admiration for his humor. From there, they engage in an amusing compatibility test, demonstrating that beneath the gruff exterior, Harrison Ford is a charming guy.

Kieran Culkin Controls the Room

My husband exclaimed as we watched Kieran Culkin outshine Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, ‘He’s commanding the room… Wow, what’s going on with his hair?’ With a flair for drama, Culkin burst in shouting ‘SIT DOWN!’ before the segment had even started. He then made Fallon fan him and reminisce about A Real Pain to test if he’d seen it. The performance was captivating television, potentially setting the stage for Culkin as a guest host of The Tonight Show. It’s high time all late-night shows featured guest hosts, but only Jimmy Kimmel has the audacity to do so. Time to choose your successors, gentlemen. Take a break, let others take the reins, and broaden your horizons.
