As a die-hard fan of Kevin Smith‘s work, I can hardly contain my excitement! The return of “Dogma” is like a long-lost friend coming home after years of being lost. It’s been a rollercoaster ride of emotions watching this film go from one legal battle to another, and it’s a testament to Smith’s tenacity that he never gave up.
After being locked away for years, Kevin Smith’s religious comedy “Dogma” is making a comeback! Exciting news for fans of the thirteenth Apostle Rufus – next year promises to be significant for them. The movie will embark on a tour, receive a SteelBook release, and become accessible on streaming platforms. Additionally, a sequel to “Dogma” is in the works. Smith also shared the story of how the film was finally released from limbo.
Over the span of years, the 1999 film “Dogma” has been a subject of negotiation among conflicting parties such as Disney, Miramax, Bob and Harvey Weinstein. As Smith recounted, he made three separate attempts to acquire the rights to the film from the Weinsteins – first for $250,000, then $500,000, and eventually $1 million. He addressed his offer to “a convicted rapist,” as he phrased it, but received no response directly from him; instead, he heard back through the rapist’s lawyer, who stated that the bid was too low. Smith desired to reclaim the rights to “Dogma” because it held deep personal significance for him – representing his faith and his relationship with his deeply Catholic parents. However, every deal approved by Harvey Weinstein included profit participation, which Smith found objectionable. “I couldn’t be associated with that person in any manner, way, or form,” Smith said.
Alanis Morissette operates in enigmatic ways. The convicted rapist found himself requiring funds for contesting his convictions, so he offloaded a substantial portion of his movie collection. “I suppose he needed money for legal expenses and whatnot,” Smith commented, “and he sold a massive bundle that included martial arts films, Fahrenheit 9/11, Kids, and Dogma.” Unbeknownst to the company, they had purchased this collection. When they inspected it, they were surprised to find Ben Affleck among the actors. Smith was contacted, and he felt like he had his long-lost child returned to him.
Since Dogma has returned with its creator and a tour on the horizon, it’s high time for a new addition to the family. At Vulture Festival, Smith revealed that concepts for a Dogma sequel have been brewing since a long drive from Las Vegas to L.A. He told the audience, “Some people may say, ‘Don’t mess with it! You’ll ruin it.’ But I’m here to assure you: I will.” Later, he playfully hinted, “I can’t contain my excitement. I’ve found a way in.” The upcoming film that Smith is planning will be more of a complementary piece rather than a traditional sequel.
Instead of reuniting to save God, Smith has confirmed that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon will feature in the sequel or companion film of “Dogma”. Given their history, it’s not surprising they’ll make an appearance: They credit Smith with saving their 1997 film “Good Will Hunting” by persuading Miramax to cast them, but Smith was never thanked at the Golden Globes or Oscars. For the past 25 years, Smith has been able to remind them of this slight, which is why they continue to appear in films together. Expect a significant role from them in the “Dogma” sequel; their involvement is crucial for its production, so you can count on them being part of it.
