In the upcoming comedy series titled “American Classic,” Kevin Kline is set to take center stage, as this half-hour show has been officially acquired by MGM+ for broadcast.
In the upcoming series, the “Disclaimer” character will be joined by Jon Tenney, known for his role in “The Closer,” and they’ll share the screen. The show is a collaborative effort between Michael Hoffman, famously behind “Soapdish,” and Bob Martin, who has worked on “The Prom.
An eight-episode series chronicles the story of Richard Bean (Kline), a self-centered Broadway performer, who comes back to his small-town home after a highly publicized breakdown. His destination is the family-owned theater where he discovered his passion for acting. However, he finds that his brother Jon (Tenney) has transformed it into a cheap dinner theater offering roast beef and mystery shows. To rejuvenate the town, the theater, and himself, Richard decides to stage a renowned American play on this makeshift stage.
The production of the series is scheduled to begin in 2025 in New Jersey. Hoffman will direct the first episode and co-produce alongside Martin and Ellen Fairey, as well as Kline, Leslie Urdang, Anthony Bregman, Miriam Mintz, David Levine, Garrett Kemble from Anonymous Content, and Tenney serving as executive producers; Fifth Season, Mar-Key Pictures, Likely Story, and Anonymous Content will be in charge of production. Kevin Cotter will act as co-producer.
Hoffman and Martin stated that their passion for the theater and its enchanting characters has been instilled in them since childhood. They expressed excitement about sharing a tale with fresh collaborators and esteemed colleagues such as the renowned comedian Kevin Kline, and a story centered around art, community, and family. For them, this opportunity is as good as it gets.
