Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon: Chapter 2’ Premieres, But What’s Next for the Saga?

On Friday evening at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, Kevin Costner unveiled the U.S. debut of “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2.” Despite this, Costner didn’t offer any new information about the progress of the Western series. However, the final moments of Chapter 2 featured an extensive sneak peek into “Chapter 3.”

Costner shared the source of inspiration behind the series with an enthusiastic audience, comprising multiple cast members as well as notable figures such as Quentin Tarantino, at the iconic Arlington Theatre.

He stated, “Those who journeyed over the ocean to reach America were in pursuit of a dream. If you were ruthless and resilient enough, you could claim it as your own. However, this was a tragic turn of events for the people who had inhabited this land for 15,000 years. This land was disputed, leading to hardship for the indigenous populations who had found balance. Yet, I am not ashamed about this, only saddened that we are largely unaware of its details.

Actor Jon Beavers from ‘Horizon’, who’s currently creating a stir in Hulu’s ‘Paradise’, expressed his readiness to continue working on the series. After the premiere, he stated, ‘Whenever Kevin tells me to get on a horse, I’m ready.’ This shows his eagerness and commitment to the project.

Kathleen Quinlan, who made a memorable appearance in “Chapter Two,” has shared that she won’t rejoin for the third chapter, but expressed her gratitude for being involved in the second movie, which focused on strong female characters.

In a conversation with Roger Durling from the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, along with costume designer Lisa Lovaas and composer John Debney, Costner expressed his long-standing concern that there were not enough women in our Westerns, as he believes the West couldn’t exist without their presence.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but acknowledge that the idea of a woman being manipulated subtly in front of an audience – it’s a reality that’s hard to deny. This insidious act is unfolding everywhere, across the globe, right now. When crafting this story for “Chapter Two,” we found it nearly impossible to exclude women from its narrative. Instead, their inclusion made our task simpler and more authentic.

During the Q&A session, Costner wasn’t questioned about his future plans for the series, but he casually mentioned, “I began this project back in 1988. I couldn’t pull it off at that time and it didn’t seem like people were too fond of it, so I decided, ‘Well, I might as well write four more.’

Kevin Costner, who won the Best Director award for “Dances With Wolves” and stars in “Yellowstone,” primarily funded parts one and two of the series with his own money. However, the first three-hour installment of this extensive narrative was met with a somewhat subdued response from both critics and viewers.

Kevin Costner, who won the Best Director for “Dances With Wolves” and stars in “Yellowstone,” mostly self-financed parts one and two of the story. Regrettably, the first three-hour episode received a lukewarm reception from critics and viewers alike.

Costner expressed his gratitude towards Durling and the festival, acknowledging their continuous backing of the project. He stated, “Tonight, you’ve made me feel like a colossus in my home.

The second chapter of the film is scheduled to hit German theaters on April 3rd, as per IMDb, but currently, there are no announced plans for a U.S. premiere. Alongside Kevin Costner, who both directs and stars in it, the cast includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Danny Huston, and Jena Malone.

The second installment of “Horizon Chapter” was debuted at the Venice Film Festival in September. In her review, film critic Jessica Kiang from EbMaster stated, “It boasts dramatic, awe-inspiring sequences like a burning wagon or a barn-dance shootout, and thanks to J. Michael Muro’s stunning cinematography, there are numerous breathtakingly epic shots of the wagon train traversing sunlit, barren landscapes, or the eventual ‘Horizon’ town emerging from the ground.
