As Kevin Costner turns 70, he remembers his once costar Whitney Houston.
January 18th was Costner’s birthday, and he posted a throwback picture on Instagram Stories. The image showed him alongside Houston during filming for “The Bodyguard” in 1992, where they both starred. Interestingly, this photo originally came from Houston’s account, which is managed by her estate.
This picture brings back the realization of how fortunate I feel for another birthday, as we miss the radiance that Whitney brought us when she was taken away.
Houston died at age 48 on Feb. 11, 2012. She would’ve been 61 this year.
In the photo, Costner and Houston are joined by hairstylist Ellin LaVar.

In June of 2024, Costner shared that during Houston’s funeral in 2012, he declined to abbreviate his 17-minute eulogy to accommodate advertisements on TV networks such as CNN while the broadcast was being aired.
Costner shared, “I had been developing this speech, gathering all my ideas, and eventually put it together in this form.” Someone suggested, “CNN might prefer if your speech was shorter due to commercial breaks.” To which he replied, “They can manage that. Let them air the commercials while I’m speaking, I don’t mind.
He added, “The burden she carried has now fallen on me. How do I speak of this young child? [I] returned to the church in Newark and it was bustling. It was vibrant. Two bands were performing, the church pulsed with energy. It felt like a sudden, powerful explosion!
