Atlas International Film acquired worldwide distribution rights for “Nawi,” a compelling drama that revolves around a 13-year-old Kenyan girl’s dream to attend high school, but her fate seems to be an unwanted arranged marriage. This film represented Kenya in the best international feature film category at the Oscars.
The movie revolves around Nawi, portrayed by Michelle Lemuya Ikeny, who dreams of going to high school. However, her plans are dashed when she discovers her father intends to marry her off to a stranger. Despite their financial requirements for the dowry, Nawi stands firm against her destiny and resists the marriage. In this fight, her brother Joel becomes her key supporter.
Despite my hopes, Nawi’s father clings tightly to ancestral customs, guided by the advice of his uncles, brothers, and the senior members of our tribe. Her own mother shares this perspective, viewing marriage as Nawi’s preordained fate.
On her wedding night, Nawi makes a daring escape, pursued by her family. She sets off on a journey towards Nairobi, holding onto her vision of a bright tomorrow. However, the weight of responsibility pulls at her heartstrings when word comes that her sister must stand in for her in an upcoming marriage.

The movie was jointly produced by FilmCrew Media, Startup Lions Assets Kenya, and Baobab Pictures – a collaboration between Kenya and Germany.
The movie received five nominations for the Africa Movie Academy Awards, with Michelle Lemuya Ikeny being named the most promising newcomer.
