Keith Lee reveals his father saved him from taking his own life during “deep depression”

On the ‘Club Shay Shay’ podcast hosted by Shannon Sharpe, renowned food critic Keith Lee shared an emotional story about how his father intervened and prevented him from taking his own life during a suicide attempt.

Despite having a strong bond with his father currently, Keith Lee’s relationship during his high school years was not as profound, pushing him to contemplate suicide at one point.

During his final year of high school, Lee admitted that the strained relationship with his father had plunged him into a profoundly sad state, where he no longer found joy or purpose in anything.

One time, the food critic was reminded of when his father had a heart-to-heart with him, stating that he could no longer converse without due respect. He emphasized that for Lee to continue living at home, they would need to build and maintain a healthy relationship.

At this point, Lee chose to take his own life with a makeshift noose from his father’s tie collection. He confided in Sharpe that he took ten ties from his father’s room, knotted them together, and looped the combined ties around his neck.

But, when he stepped off a cooler and began hanging in the air, he started to regret his decision.

According to Lee, he was airborne for about ten seconds, reaching a stage where he began to lose altitude, but it was already too late. In an attempt to save himself, he tried to grasp onto the straps and hoist himself upward.

“Due to my father’s actions, I hold him in high esteem. After a challenging period we both experienced, he came to support me and expressed his love for me. That’s why I am who I am today.

After ensuring his son’s safety, he explained to Lee that he believed their turbulent relationship was merely a passing stage. Further, he assured him that they would navigate through the difficult times as a team and emerge from the challenging period together.

From then on, what my father did resonated deeply with me – a feeling of his love that I’d yearned for so dearly. I expressed, “From now on, I live not just for myself, but for something greater,” and it’s all due to my dad’s incredible act of saving my life.

Currently, Lee is 28 years old, roughly a decade after his attempted suicide. Over this period, he’s managed to amass a huge online fanbase numbering in the millions. By leveraging his celebrity status, he’s been promoting small, independently-run eateries through viral restaurant reviews, thereby helping them gain visibility and customers.
