Keira Knightley has had a fantastic career, but she’s probably best known for her roles in two movies she appeared in early on. The Pirates of the Caribbean films, which you can stream on Disney+, continue to be hugely popular and have earned billions worldwide, and Love Actually is so beloved that its iconic scene with Knightley has been endlessly copied and referenced. Interestingly, despite the fame of these films, Keira Knightley herself hasn’t watched them very often.
Keira Knightley recently shared on BBC’s Scott Mills breakfast show (as reported by People) that she rarely watches her own films. She typically either skips watching them altogether or views them only once – at the premiere – and then avoids them in the future. She went on to explain…
I’ve either never seen myself in those videos, or I’ve only watched them once. It’s just a really odd and uncomfortable experience seeing your own face on screen.
Keira Knightley isn’t alone in avoiding watching her own movies. Many actors have admitted it’s a tough experience. Some get caught up in analyzing their mistakes, while others simply feel embarrassed seeing themselves on screen. Knightley appears to be in the latter group – she genuinely seems uncomfortable even looking at her own face.
Despite the film’s popularity – many consider Love Actually a Christmas classic and will likely watch it repeatedly over the next few months – Keira Knightley doesn’t rewatch it herself. She’s only seen it once, when it was first released. She explained…
I only watched ‘Love Actually’ once, at its premiere. I believe I was around 18 years old at the time, which was more than 20 years ago.
She’d only watched Love Actually once, but apparently even that was more than she saw of the third Pirates of the Caribbean film. It seems she didn’t bother with the third movie after seeing the second at its premiere – the reason being she was bothered by all the close-up shots of herself. Knightley went on to explain…
I haven’t seen the third movie. I did see the second one when it first came out, but the third one… I just think there’s way too much focus on close-ups of faces. It’s just a lot of oversized faces on screen, and honestly, it’s unnecessary.
Keira Knightley apparently forgot she made a brief appearance in the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film, and it might be because she didn’t watch the third one. It’s understandable – with so many Pirates movies, it’s easy to lose track of what happens in each one and when you were even in them.
Okay, so Keira Knightley apparently isn’t a big fan of watching her own films, which is her prerogative, I guess. But honestly? I, along with a lot of moviegoers, are perfectly happy to look at her on screen. She’s fantastic, and I don’t mind her being a captivating presence one bit!
