Keanu Reeves spent 5 years helping teenage girl make a chess movie

Everyone loves Keanu Reeves, and he’s gaining even more fans after helping a teenager create her own chess movie, which will debut in April.

Before the debut of her film, Madwoman’s Game, at the Miami Film Festival, Bianca Mitchell-Avila’s parents shared a story about how Keanu Reeves generously supported her in getting the movie made.

They shared that their daughter was highlighted in an article back in 2020 for her opinions on the popular Netflix series, The Queen’s Gambit. However, the online discussion surrounding the article was largely negative, with many comments being critical or hostile towards women who play chess.

Rather than giving up, she decided to create a documentary focusing on women in the world of chess. The only challenge was figuring out how to actually make it happen. That’s when Keanu came along.

Keanu Reeves steps up to help teenage girl make chess movie

My mom and dad were telling me this crazy story on Reddit – apparently, back in 2021, my sister somehow got her creative project shown to Keanu Reeves, and she did it all on her own, working from our kitchen table! She doesn’t know anyone in Hollywood, so it was a total long shot, but she actually pulled it off.

Keanu Reeves apparently really liked the concept and became an executive producer, helping to guide the project’s development.

Mitchell-Avila’s parents were thrilled to discover he’d been a chess player in high school and has been mentoring her for more than five years! They shared, “We’re so grateful to Keanu – he’s been incredibly supportive and we couldn’t have asked for a better influence. He’s just amazing!”

The girl’s parents shared that they’ll be revealing how Keanu Reeves saw their daughter’s project soon, but they aren’t ready to share the details of how he became involved just yet.

They said Keanu immediately embraced her concept and worked tirelessly to bring it to life. He’s been a valuable guide in the entertainment industry and a consistent source of support for her whenever she’s needed it.

In 2021, a trailer for the documentary ‘Welcome to The Madwoman’s Game’ was released on YouTube.

I was so impressed reading Bianca Mitchell-Avila’s account of how she started the documentary! She was only 16 at the time, and she already had commitments from Jennifer Shahade and Alexandra Botez – it was amazing to see how she made it all happen.

The documentary Madwoman’s Game tells the story of Bianca Mitchell-Avila, a talented Latina chess player who views the game as a guide for life. The film follows Bianca as she travels, receives mentorship, and competes against top female players, demonstrating how the strategies and lessons of chess apply to everyday challenges. Ultimately, the documentary asks a thought-provoking question: if life is a game of chess, what’s the best way to play it?

Madwoman’s Game is set to premiere on April 16th at the Miami Film Festival.
