Keanu Reeves Says ‘My Heart’ Wants ‘John Wick 5’ but ‘I Don’t Know if My Knees Can Do It’: Right Now They’re Saying ‘I Can’t Do Another’

As a long-time fan of the John Wick franchise, I find myself both hopeful and worried about the potential for a fifth installment. Keanu Reeves‘ physical wellbeing is of utmost importance, and his concerns about his knees are understandable after the grueling action sequences he’s performed in each film. Yet, his resilience and dedication to the character are unparalleled, making it hard not to hope for one more adventure with our favorite assassin.

Keanu Reeves, during an interview with CBS News, expressed some doubts about his physical ability to handle another “John Wick” film due to concerns over the state of his knees. He’s appeared in four “John Wick” movies so far, which together have earned over $1 billion, and will return as the title character in the upcoming spinoff film “Ballerina”. However, whether or not we’ll see him again in “John Wick 5” might hinge on the condition of his knees.

Reeves pointed out, ‘It’s always possible that things might change.’ At the moment, his knees are telling him they’re not up for another ‘John Wick,’ but his heart is willing. However, he isn’t certain if his knees will be able to handle it.

In “John Wick: Chapter 4,” it appears that John Wick meets his demise during a duel meant to liberate him from the High Table. In the third round, John is struck by a fatal bullet and collapses on the steps of the Basilica of Sacré Coeur, only to have a vision of his deceased wife, Helen, moments before he dies. The movie concludes with Winston (played by Ian McShane) and the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) paying their respects at John’s grave.

Previously, Reeves hinted at the possibility of “John Wick 5” during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, stating: “To be honest, I wouldn’t consider making another ‘John Wick’ film without Chad Stahelski. We need to see how that might work out. For me, it seems fitting that John Wick achieves peace.

As a dedicated moviegoer who can’t get enough of the John Wick franchise, I’ve been left pondering whether Keanu Reeves will reprise his role in a potential fifth installment following the cryptic ending of Chapter 4. In an exclusive chat with Empire magazine last year, director Chad Stahelski shared intriguing insights, disclosing for the first time that a definitive conclusion for Chapter 4 was actually filmed and screen-tested. In this alternate cut of the movie, there was no doubt left in viewers’ minds that John Wick made it through the life-or-death duel unscathed.

Stahelski mentioned that the ending we witnessed in the film wasn’t the original one. Instead, John Wick appeared at the end, making it evident he survived. It seems our test audiences favored the open-ended conclusion over a more definitive one.

Initially, the ending of “John Wick: Chapter 4” contradicted Keanu Reeves’ initial intention to permanently end John Wick’s story. At approximately the same time, Basil Iwanyk, a producer for the franchise, disclosed to Collider that Reeves had implored the team to kill off John Wick in the final scene of “John Wick: Chapter 4.” Consistent with his experience after filming every “John Wick” movie, Reeves was so exhausted that continuing was challenging. However, as it turned out, the producers did not fully heed their leading actor’s advice once more.

Following the production of the second, third, and fourth films, Iwanyk stated that the process left Keanu drained, both physically and emotionally. By the conclusion, he’d often express, “I can’t do this again,” and we concurred with his sentiment. The man is essentially depleted because he consistently gives his all. He mentioned, “I want to be definitively killed at the end of this movie.” We replied, “We might leave a 10% chance for survival instead.

At this moment, Lionsgate hasn’t scheduled “John Wick 5” for release, despite previously showing interest in the film. Simultaneously, Keanu Reeves sustained an injury to his knee during a mishap on the set of his upcoming project with Aziz Ansari, titled “Good Fortune.

Reeves will be back as John Wick when spinoff movie “Ballerina” opens in theaters June 6, 2025.
