For the past few months, there’s been no news about the progress of Constantine 2, but the lead actor has now shared some encouraging news about the anticipated sequel. Despite rumors that James Gunn had cancelled the project after taking over DC Studios, it appears the supernatural movie is still moving forward as planned.
While promoting his new movie, Good Fortune, Keanu Reeves shared some hopeful news with Fandango about Constantine 2. He said, “Fingers crossed. Another draft of the script came in. We’re gonna take it to the studio and hopefully they like it too.” It appears that James Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-CEOs of DC Studios, will be reviewing the script soon, which could lead to the film being approved for production. However, with DC Studios now focusing on the DCU after the success of Superman, it’s uncertain if a separate project like Constantine will move forward quickly. Despite this, it would be difficult to ignore the opportunity to bring back director Francis Lawrence (The Long Walk) and Reeves for another supernatural story.
First appearing in 2005, Constantine stood out as a unique superhero film because it didn’t closely follow the comic books, instead offering a fresh interpretation of the story. The visually impressive movie was directed by Lawrence and starred Reeves as the popular demon hunter known for his smoking. While the DC character has appeared in various TV shows, he hasn’t been on the big screen since the 2005 film. Even with DC Studios concentrating on a connected universe, fans would likely appreciate standalone projects that make sense, such as The Batman – Part II and Constantine 2.
‘Constantine 2’ Script Problems, Explained
Warner Bros.
The original Constantine film featured some great action, but it focused more on horror and the supernatural. Because the movie has gained a dedicated fanbase, a sequel seemed unlikely – until recently. However, the studio doesn’t appear to want to make a follow-up that’s similar to the 2005 film. Peter Stormare, who portrayed Lucifer in the first movie, recently mentioned that Keanu Reeves was facing disagreements with the studio regarding their desire for a large-scale, action-heavy script for Constantine 2.
There’s been a lot of discussion and revisions, because… I believe Keanu Reeves, whom I know fairly well, isn’t thrilled with the scripts. Typically, that’s what the studios push for… The original film didn’t do very well initially, but it gradually gained popularity, becoming a cult classic, and now it’s considered one of the biggest cult movies of all time. However, when it comes to making a sequel, the studios want to add a lot more spectacle-things like cars flying through the air and over-the-top action sequences with flips and fights.
Keanu shared that he felt ‘John Wick’ had a spiritual element, focusing on the battle between demons and ordinary people, and he wanted to maintain that theme. We discussed this, and I envision God appearing similarly-in a black suit and with a look reminiscent of Lucifer from the original film. It will be challenging to replicate the first movie exactly, as I’m now 12 years older. However, Keanu’s preference is to create a sequel that closely resembles the initial installment.
Now that a revised draft exists, it seems the project has a script that Keanu Reeves is happier with. After his success with the John Wick movies, it’s understandable that he doesn’t want to immediately jump into another action-heavy role, particularly with a fifth film still coming. Currently, Constantine 2 doesn’t have a confirmed release date, but hopefully Warner Bros. and DC Studios will decide on the project’s future soon.
