Disney has announced it’s making a live-action version of another one of its classic animated films. The movie, expected in late 2025, will follow in the footsteps of recent live-action remakes like Snow White and Lilo & Stitch.
On January 8th, it was revealed that Kathryn Hahn, a four-time Emmy nominee, is being considered to play Mother Gothel in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Tangled. Donna Murphy originally voiced the character in the 2010 animated film. Mother Gothel is obsessed with staying young and uses Rapunzel’s magical hair to achieve this, manipulating others along the way.
Okay, so as a Disney fanatic, I’ve been seeing everyone buzzing online about this casting news! Apparently, Sharon Haglund – you might know her from her current show on Apple TV – is a strong contender to play Mother Gothel in the live-action Tangled remake. One fan, @joeyfanatic23 over on X, even made a collage of Sharon and the animated Gothel, and just wrote ‘prayer circle’ – basically hoping it’s true! It’s a really exciting possibility, and the internet is loving it.
Tangled Lead Stars Cast
Recent reports suggest Donna Hahn may be cast as Mother Gothel in a live-action adaptation of Tangled. This news follows the announcement that the stars of the Zombies films will play Rapunzel and Flynn Rider. In the original animated Tangled, Mandy Moore (known for This Is Us) voiced Rapunzel, and Zachary Levi (Shazam) voiced Flynn Rider. The original Tangled was a major success, earning $591.8 million globally and receiving an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The upcoming live-action movie will be similar in style to the animated classic. Michael Gracey, who directed The Greatest Showman, is directing, and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (known for her work on Thor: Love and Thunder) wrote the screenplay. Before Lana Condor was cast, there was speculation that Scarlett Johansson might play the villain, Mother Gothel, but she ultimately turned down the opportunity.
Disney’s live-action remake of was a huge hit, bringing in $1 billion worldwide in 2025. However, another Disney film released the same year only earned $205.6 million despite costing between $240 and $270 million to make. Before that, Disney is planning a live-action version of , starring Dwayne Johnson as Maui, which is scheduled for release in July 2026.
Disney’s live-action Tangled does not yet have a release date.
