I’m fascinated by Kathryn Bigelow’s work, and I recently read about her latest film, A House of Dynamite. It’s amazing to me that she’s not bothered by the Pentagon’s frustration with the movie – in fact, she sees it as a good sign, meaning the right people are paying attention! She believes culture can actually influence policy, and she’s thrilled the film is sparking conversation about nuclear weapons. Apparently, the Missile Defense Agency even sent out a memo criticizing the film’s portrayal of their defenses, which then got leaked! The movie’s set inside the Pentagon, following people trying to prevent a nuclear attack on Chicago. What’s really incredible is that it was the most-watched film on Netflix last week, racking up over 22 million views. It’s clear her message is reaching exactly who it needs to reach, and I think that’s powerful.
According to a Pentagon memo, the fact that the interceptors in the movie failed to hit their target was a deliberate choice to create dramatic tension for viewers. The memo emphasizes that actual tests have shown very different, and more successful, results.
Did the Netflix film A House of Dynamite mislead its 22 million viewers about U.S. missile defense? Director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Noah Oppenheim defend their portrayal of the system as unreliable. Oppenheim explained to The Hollywood Reporter that they relied on experts who believe the system is essentially a gamble, as depicted in the film. Their research focused on individuals who had recently left government service, rather than current officials. Oppenheim clarified that the disagreement isn’t between the filmmakers and the Pentagon, but between the Pentagon and a broader range of experts. He also pointed out that Senator Edward Markey, retired General Douglas Lute, long-time journalists Tom Nichols and Fred Kaplan, and the nonpartisan physics organization APS, have all affirmed the film’s accuracy. Bigelow emphasized to The Hollywood Reporter that the movie prioritizes “realism and authenticity,” stating she simply presents “the truth.”
