Katee Sackhoff Opens Up About Daughter’s Cancer Diagnosis At 8 Months Old: ‘Too Many Families Don’t Get The Same Outcome’

Katee Sackhoff is well-known for her acting in popular shows like Battlestar Galactica and The Mandalorian. Recently, however, she’s been focusing on a different, and even more important, role: motherhood. While navigating her daughter’s cancer treatment, Sackhoff has been vocal about problems within pediatric healthcare, explaining that it often takes a determined and frustrated parent to highlight the system’s shortcomings.

The actress and her husband Robin Gadsby had their first child, Ginevra Grace Gadsby, in December 2021. Just eight months later, Ginervra (aka Ginny) was diagnosed with cancer and, while Sackhoff said in an Instagram post that her daughter is thriving today, she’s asking for help because there are so many people with sick children who see different outcomes. The actress wrote:

As a film lover, I’m always drawn to stories about hope and resilience, and it breaks my heart to think about how little support there is for kids’ healthcare. It’s infuriating, honestly, in a country that says it values children. I feel incredibly lucky that my daughter is doing so well now – she’s finished treatment and is thriving – but so many families aren’t as fortunate. It just feels fundamentally wrong, and it’s something we absolutely have to fix.

A video clip from an interview with Katee Sackhoff highlighted a concerning issue: only about 4% of the National Cancer Institute’s funding is dedicated to pediatric cancer research. Sackhoff explained that this is likely because doctors are discouraged from specializing in pediatric oncology, as those doctors earn roughly half the salary of oncologists who treat adults.

Sackhoff is calling for that to change, as she continued:

I promise to speak up and fight for the funding of organizations that are truly making a difference in the lives of children. I’ll also push for change with our government leaders. Our children deserve so much better, and if you care about a child, you should feel strongly about this too. The possibility of something terrible happening is always present. Don’t be afraid to get upset and take action – our children are the future, and we need to start treating them as such. 💛

It’s easy to see why she feels so strongly, considering everything her family has overcome recently. The actress, known for a new film with Josh Hartnett that’s full of surprises, is now focused on making a difference and helping other families find the same happiness her own has.

Katee Sackhoff and her husband, like many celebrities, prefer to keep their children’s faces private (they also have a young son named Granger Oakes Gadsby, born in May 2024). However, they do enjoy sharing glimpses of their family life on social media. They recently posted photos from a fun trip to Disney on Instagram.

It’s wonderful to hear Ginny is thriving, and it’s lovely seeing the whole family enjoy themselves. It’s also really heartwarming to see how dedicated Katee Sackhoff is to helping other families create their own special moments.
