As a long-time cinema enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of Hollywood from behind the screen and in front of it, I am deeply saddened yet not surprised by Kate Beckinsale‘s harrowing account of abuse and harassment on film sets. Her experiences, shared with raw honesty, echo the stories of countless women who have faced similar ordeals in the pursuit of their craft.
The fact that Beckinsale, a seasoned actress with an impressive resume, has had to endure such treatment is a testament to the insidious nature of this issue. It’s not just about a few bad apples; it’s about a systemic problem that permeates the entire industry.
It’s disheartening to know that even after speaking up, she was gaslit, ostracized, and silenced. The fact that she was forced to continue working under such conditions is a stark reminder of the power dynamics at play in Hollywood.
However, I must admit, it did make me chuckle when she mentioned being given a bike while waiting for her co-star who was drunk every day on set. It’s like something out of a surrealist film – a bike as a solution to a problem that should never have existed in the first place!
I hope that by sharing her story, Beckinsale will inspire other women in the industry to speak up and break the cycle of silence. It’s high time we dismantle this toxic culture and create a safer, more equitable environment for everyone involved in filmmaking.
Kate Beckinsale recently shared a video on Instagram, recounting several instances of harassment and abuse she’s experienced on different film sets. This comes in response to Blake Lively’s sexual harassment allegations against her “It Ends With Us” director and co-star, Justin Baldoni. Beckinsale expressed her gratitude towards Lively for bringing attention to this issue, stating that it’s not just an ancient problem that no one is dealing with; rather, it’s an ongoing one.
Initially, Beckinsale recalled an instance when she was derisively labeled “that c-word,” a slur directed at her, simply because she publicly criticized a male colleague for his excessive drinking on the film set every day.
Beckinsale shared that he took a long time to memorize his lines during filming, keeping her and the crew waiting for six hours each day. This meant she couldn’t spend evenings with her daughter while working on the movie. The studio compensated by providing her a bike to pass the time at the studio lot. Unfortunately, she was also subjected to disrespectful remarks, including being called a ‘cunt’ and a ‘bitch,’ and during one take, she was referred to as a ‘stupid bitch.’
In two separate film sets, I found myself following an extremely regimented eating plan and workout routine, which ultimately led to me missing my menstrual cycle altogether.
Or
On two movie sets, I adhered to a very strict diet and exercise regimen that caused me to stop having my period.
Or
In two film productions, I underwent a stringent diet and fitness routine that resulted in me losing my monthly cycle completely.
In one of her action films, Beckinsale claimed that during a fight sequence, her male co-star caused her physical harm. However, when she disclosed that she’d been hurt, she was subsequently shunned by the film’s cast members.
She clarified that some performers find pleasure in portraying fights where they can legally hurt women. Regrettably, this is what happened to her – she endured such harm, so much so that medical imaging like MRIs confirmed it. She was manipulated, made to believe the issue was with her instead of the situation, and excluded from cast events as soon as she brought up concerns about the matter.
Later on, Beckinsale was compelled by her publicist to participate in a photo session, which she found herself in an unfortunate situation to attend just a day after experiencing a miscarriage. She voiced her concerns, saying “I can’t. I’m bleeding. I don’t want to go and change my clothes in front of strangers for a photoshoot. I’m still recovering from a miscarriage.” However, she was met with the response, “You’ll have to, or you may face legal consequences.
Beckinsale shared her experience with persistent harassment faced by many female actors on sets. She stated, “This kind of incident has been happening for a long time. I have countless anecdotes like this one.” Recalling an instance from when she was 18 years old, she disclosed that someone she trusted on the crew made unwanted advances towards her. Approaching the lead actress, who was known to be supportive of women, and confiding in her about the incident, she was met with denial. “I told her this person had just violated me, but she dismissed it, saying ‘No, it didn’t happen,'” Beckinsale recounted. Seeking validation from another actress, she shared her experience of being assaulted by the same man. However, she too was met with disbelief and was told, “No, you haven’t been.
Beckinsale stated, “If you bring it up, you’re in trouble,” regarding the ongoing issue of women being silenced on film sets. She explained, “It’s supposed to be that you take it and somehow you’re cool with it. This needs to change. I want to thank Blake Lively for bringing attention to this problem that is not ancient history but rather an ongoing issue. When it does happen, a system quickly moves in to completely undermine you.
