Kat Dennings Says Casting Directors Told Her She Wasn’t ‘Pretty Enough’ and ‘Fat’ at Age 12: ‘There Was Not a Lot of Inclusivity at All’

Over the past 24 years since her debut on the WB comedy series “Raising Dad”, Kat Dennings has gained a wealth of experience.

During a recent interview with People, Dennings opened up about some harsh casting directors she encountered from an early age.

During my early acting days, when I was auditioning and making my way into the industry, the atmosphere was significantly distinct from what it is today. Back then, there wasn’t much emphasis on inclusivity at all. The environment was tough and unforgiving. There was a tremendous amount of harsh criticism and people didn’t shy away from expressing their negative opinions.

She went on to say, “It was quite astonishing to ponder over it. I would think, ‘Can people really make such comments about a child? This is unbelievable.’ To give you an idea, I was only 12 years old. I’d attend auditions and give my best performance, then my manager would call me back and ask, ‘How did it go?’ To which they’d reply, ‘They thought you weren’t attractive enough and you’re overweight.’

Regardless of the negativity, Dennings maintained a robustly optimistic viewpoint throughout, finding encouragement in her family to disregard such remarks.

Dennings expressed his mindset, stating that despite facing some challenges, it didn’t dampen his spirit. He felt determined, saying something along the lines of ‘I’ll prove them wrong.’ It seems his parents played a significant role in shaping this resilience as they often encouraged him not to heed the opinions of those who were deemed foolish. And so, Dennings echoed their sentiments, thinking, ‘They may be idiots, but I am not.’

The actress from “Shifting Gears” commented that Hollywood today appears more gentle and understanding compared to the time when she first entered the industry, which she recalled as utterly mad.

Dennings stated, ‘Before, there wasn’t any body positivity, inclusivity, or representation.’ He found it quite unpleasant and described it as ‘really disgusting.’
