Social media sensation Kallmekris has issued an apology following the upload of a YouTube video criticizing a book genre widely appreciated by Booktok content creators.
For several years running, Kallmekris has gathered more than 50 million fans on TikTok through her humorous videos showcasing a range of characters she herself developed.
A Canadian social media personality expanded her reach to YouTube, amassing more than 11 million followers through regular posts reacting to an array of topics such as unusual TikTok clips, popular trends, and other intriguing content.
Last Saturday, January 11th, Kris uploaded a video expressing her opinions about the romantic fiction books recommended by influential BookTok personalities on TikTok.
In her critique of Fifty Shades of Grey, Kris remarked that “romance novels” often lack good writing quality and tend to feature unhealthy relationships among their central characters. She further commented on a different book titled Ice Breaker, expressing her disapproval towards its cover design.
She commented: “I find myself wondering what all the excitement is about. The cover design appears childish to me, which left me quite puzzled. Frankly, I felt the storyline was weak overall, and the book’s content contains a significant amount of adult themes. Quite frankly, it took me by surprise.
People swiftly flooded the comment section to express their opinions, and a significant number of them expressed dissatisfaction with Kris’ views on their preferred books.
One user stated: “Women should have the freedom to read any material they choose, without facing shame for their choices.
“Caring this much about what other people like reading is wild,” a third replied.
On TikTok, content creators associated with BookTok started sharing videos discussing Kris’ viewpoint, which led to her removing her YouTube video from public view and issuing an apology on January 14th.
KallmeKris issues apology over book review video
On her TikTok account, she clarified the reasons for her BookTok review video during a five-minute discussion.
She mentioned that she intended the video to be playful and amusing, with no intention of being serious at all. However, things didn’t turn out as planned. Afterwards, she clarified that the response initially was favorable, but later she faced criticism.
She acknowledged that her attempts at humor may have been misguided and not everyone found them amusing. She clarified that it was never her intention to upset anyone.
After wrapping up my gaming session yesterday, I attempted something with the best intentions of being humorous, but unfortunately, it seemed to go over many heads in a confusing way. I can’t really justify why it turned out that way, but I’m determined to learn from this experience. I plan on taking the feedback on that video and your constructive criticism to heart, and aim to improve my future content.
“I never ever want to upset anyone and I hope that everyone knows that.”
The pushback occurs merely a few days prior to TikTok, owned by ByteDance, being scheduled for a ban in the U.S. on January 19, 2025. It’s been announced that TikTok will cease operations on this same day.
