A K-pop concert in Belfast, Ireland, sparked controversy after parents expressed concern that the performances weren’t suitable for children and didn’t feature the ‘Demon Hunters’ content they anticipated.
The K-Pop Forever Tribute show took place at The SSE Arena in Belfast on February 19th as part of a global tour. However, many parents expressed their disappointment online both during and after the show, stating that the performance didn’t live up to their expectations based on what they thought they had purchased tickets for.
A lot of viewers anticipated a series focused on Netflix’s popular ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters,’ but were surprised to find it was actually a celebration of various K-pop artists.
Reactions to the event
The event was advertised as a high-energy concert with popular songs from groups like Blackpink, BTS, and Twice. It also featured music from Demon Hunters, including their hits “Soda Pop” and “Golden,” and included songs based on the popular movie K-Pop Demon Hunters.
The listing also described the concert as an “ultimate non-stop party for all ages.”
Many videos from parents have become popular on TikTok, and one user wrote in the description of their video:
This concert was meant to be a highlight for many children, including mine. The advertising for the SSE K-pop show promised a certain experience – things like K-pop Demon Hunters were heavily featured in their promotions – but the actual show didn’t deliver on those expectations.
Near the end of the show, several songs from the K-Pop group Demon Hunters were played.
A performance of the K-Pop Demon Hunters song, “Free,” was shared online. The poster expressed strong emotions, writing, “I don’t even know where to begin!” after attending a tribute show with their daughter at the SSE Arena Belfast, and included several angry emojis.
Many parents were confused, but some reported their children had a fantastic time, while also understanding why others were let down.
Venue responds to criticism
Following the backlash, the venue issued a statement on Facebook addressing complaints.
We’ve received some feedback regarding tonight’s K-Pop Forever Tribute show at The SSE Arena, Belfast. The show is part of a world tour and aims to showcase the variety of K-Pop music, including songs by artists like BTS, Blackpink, and Katseye. It also featured eight songs by Demon Hunters, such as ‘Golden’, ‘Takedown’, and ‘Soda Pop’.
Most customers enjoyed the show, and while we recognize it wasn’t what everyone anticipated, we believe it was a high-quality tribute to K-Pop as a whole.
