The news about the sexual harassment lawsuit against Baldoni is indeed troubling, and it’s always disheartening when such allegations surface in our industry.
Earlier this month, Justin Baldoni was recognized by Vital Voices, an organization that empowers female business leaders, for his significant support to women and utilizing his influence to bring about impactful social change. However, on Monday, Vital Voices withdrew the Voices of Solidarity Award after Blake Lively filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against the director of “It Ends With Us.
The Voices of Solidarity Award is given to exceptional men who bravely champion women’s and girls’ rights. On December 9, 2024, Justin Baldoni was the recipient of this honor. However, on Saturday, December 21, it was reported in the news that Blake Lively had filed a lawsuit against Mr. Baldoni, his publicists, and others, which contains serious allegations of inappropriate behavior. Vital Voices expressed their concern about these reports, as they contradict the values and spirit of the Award. As a result, we have withdrawn the award from Mr. Baldoni.
Last Saturday, The New York Times published a report stating that Lively filed a complaint against Baldoni for alleged sexual harassment, creating a toxic work atmosphere, and orchestrating a defamatory social media campaign to harm her reputation. According to Lively, Baldoni’s actions inflicted “severe emotional damage” on her and her family. However, Baldoni’s attorney Bryan Freedman described the complaint as “shameful” and filled with “categorically false accusations.
During the promotional tour of “It Ends With Us”, speculation swirled about whether Lively and Baldoni had a strained relationship on set, as they avoided joint press appearances and deliberately kept their distance at the film’s New York City premiere. Prior to the movie’s release, Lively faced heavy criticism online for seemingly minimizing the domestic violence narrative (as her character is in an abusive relationship) and instead using media attention to promote her new haircare brand. Despite this, “It Ends With Us” proved to be a massive success for Sony, generating over $350 million at the global box office on a budget of just $25 million.
Following the lawsuit, well-known personalities like Amy Schumer and the cast members of “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” including America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel, have voiced their support for Lively. Colleen Hoover, author of “It Ends With us,” also commended Lively for disclosing her allegations against Baldoni. On Instagram, Hoover expressed gratitude stating, “You’ve been nothing but truthful, compassionate, encouraging, and patient since our first encounter.
