‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Quickly Tops the Netflix Chart Days After Debut

Gareth Edwards quickly gained recognition after his film Monsters, a unique blend of road-trip romance and science fiction featuring alien creatures. This success led him to direct Godzilla in 2014, launching the Monsterverse, and then Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Following his original film The Creator, Edwards returned to established franchises, consistently bringing his distinctive style to well-known stories, which audiences are loving.

Edwards’ new film blends classic and modern ideas by featuring extinct creatures within a current-day story. This isn’t a new concept – Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park famously brought dinosaurs to life. However, Jurassic World Rebirth takes things further, exploring a fresh take on these creatures. While the original Jurassic Park focused on bringing dinosaurs back, Rebirth presents a story where dinosaurs might actually save humanity. The film has quickly become a hit with viewers, reaching the #1 spot on Netflix just days after its release.

Honestly, I’m really curious about what this all means for the future of Jurassic World and if we’ll see more from Colin Trevorrow as director. It’s a big question mark right now!

A Financial Step Back for the Series

I was so thrilled to see Jurassic World Rebirth do so well for Universal – it made over $339 million in the US and nearly $870 million worldwide! While it was a huge hit, it was interesting to note it didn’t quite reach the billion-dollar mark like previous films, which hadn’t happened since Jurassic Park III. Honestly, after a long wait, Jurassic World really brought the whole series back to life and got a new generation hooked on dinosaurs, and Rebirth continued that momentum!

In Rebirth, the filmmakers aimed to blend familiar elements with fresh ideas, doing so more successfully than in Jurassic World Dominion. As shown in the video, the script was written by David Koepp, who also wrote the original films, and even included a scene originally cut from Michael Crichton’s novel. By moving the dinosaurs beyond the park setting, the movie continued the storyline established in the previous three films.

The new film didn’t perform as well at the box office as the first one, and critics weren’t overly impressed, giving it a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Although there’s been talk of a sequel since Rebirth came out, it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.

Gareth Edwards’ ‘Rogue One’ Dilemma and His Filmmaking Prowess

Walt Disney Studios

Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla was a clear step up from the 1998 American Godzilla, although that wasn’t a difficult standard to meet. Rogue One initially earned over $1 billion globally, but after its release, stories surfaced about significant re-shoots and editing, largely directed by writer Tony Gilroy. Fans noticed several scenes from the trailers were cut from the final version, leading to questions about how much Edwards’ original vision differed from the released film.

Although he had achieved success, Gareth Edwards didn’t direct another film until 2023’s The Creator. The film’s original title led some to believe he was deliberately avoiding established franchises. However, he surprised audiences by taking on the popular Jurassic World series with Rebirth. Currently, there’s no news about a Rebirth sequel, so it’s unknown whether Edwards will direct a follow-up or if Rebirth was a one-time project for him.
