The highly anticipated showdown between “Dunesday” and another blockbuster on December 17, 2026 – which was predicted to be the biggest box office competition since “Barbenheimer” – might not happen. Sony Pictures recently made an unexpected announcement that could change those plans.
Sony has delayed the release of a movie by two weeks, moving it from December 11th to December 25th. This is a smart decision, as it prevents the film from losing momentum to two major releases during its second weekend in theaters. The earlier December 11th date is now available, which could be exactly what another film, Avengers: Doomsday, needs to perform better and avoid a disappointing opening alongside Dune.
Why Avengers: Doomsday Needs to Avoid a Clash With Dune: Part Three
Now that December 11th is confirmed as a release date, Marvel should consider moving up the release of Avengers: Doomsday by one week to avoid competing with Dune: Part Three on opening day. While stars Robert Downey Jr. and Timothée Chalamet have expressed support for both films releasing around the same time—hoping for a similar boost like Barbie and Oppenheimer saw last year—it would be best if the two movies premiered on different weekends.
While the ‘Dunesday’ meme has generated some buzz, releasing both Dune: Part Two and Marvel’s new crossover film at the same time isn’t great for either movie. Unlike Barbie and Oppenheimer, which appealed to different audiences, these two 2026 blockbusters are both aimed at the same viewers. This is especially concerning for Marvel, which needs its upcoming film – featuring the return of Robert Downey Jr. – to revitalize the brand. Disney and Marvel are counting on Doomsday to be a hit, and they’re worried that Dune‘s highly anticipated finale will take a significant portion of their opening weekend box office earnings.
A further challenge for the release of “Doomsday” is the importance of premium formats like IMAX. Marvel’s big films usually earn a significant portion of their total revenue from these higher-priced screenings. However, “Doomsday” won’t have access to IMAX numbers, which will likely reduce its overall box office potential.
Shifting the release of Avengers: Doomsday to December 11th would solve these problems. The film would have a full week in theaters without major competition, practically ensuring it opens as the number one movie. This is crucial for Marvel’s efforts to revitalize the Marvel Cinematic Universe after some recent challenges. Plus, Doomsday would get a week to show in IMAX theaters before Dune takes over that premium format for the following three weeks.
As a big fan, I’ve noticed the Avengers movies usually make a huge splash right out of the gate, and I think Doomsday could do the same – earning a large portion of its total box office numbers in its first week. A drop in its second weekend wouldn’t be as bad as a disappointing opening, honestly. I’m optimistic both films could have strong debuts, which would be great news for fans of both franchises!
It wouldn’t be unusual for Marvel to release a film early, and they recently shifted a release date by a week to launch it internationally and in the US at the same time in late April. Although the reasons for this change are different now, Marvel should consider moving up the premiere of Avengers: Doomsday to avoid competing with Dune: Part Three.
Marvel Needs Avengers: Doomsday to Be a Success
Marvel Studios really needs Avengers: Doomsday to be a big hit when it opens in theaters. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been struggling lately, with recent movies not performing as well at the box office as they used to. Even films that critics liked, such as Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, haven’t been able to draw audiences like the earlier, hugely successful movies from the Infinity Saga.
In 2026, two major Marvel movies are set to be released: Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday. Both films are expected to be huge hits and are designed to be very profitable for the studio. Brand New Day is a follow-up to the incredibly successful Spider-Man: No Way Home, while Doomsday continues the story from Infinity War and Endgame, both of which earned over $2 billion at the box office.
Although early signs suggest Avengers: Doomsday could do well in theaters, it faces a challenge. Unlike previous Avengers films connected to the hugely popular Infinity Saga, this one is tied to the newer Multiverse Saga, which audiences haven’t embraced as much. This means the film needs to impress viewers and earn their support, rather than relying on existing fan loyalty.
Releasing Doomsday now isn’t a smart move for Marvel, especially as they try to regain viewers. They can’t afford to lose fans to a growing franchise like Dune. While it’s great to see the actors playfully compete to promote both films, both Avengers and Dune are too valuable to their studios to risk hurting each other’s box office numbers during opening weekend.
With a combined production cost of over $700 million for both Doomsday and Dune: Part Three, neither film can afford to fail at the box office. Doomsday accounts for the majority of that cost—around $500 million—so a poor performance would be a major setback for Marvel. It’s time to be cautious—Doomsday should have its release date adjusted.
Jumanji Is the Winner of the December Box Office Clash
Surprisingly, the Jumanji franchise appears to be the most strategically positioned film in the crowded December 2026 box office. The third installment in the rebooted series will feature the return of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, Nick Jonas, Danny DeVito, and other familiar faces. However, Sony understands that Jumanji doesn’t quite have the same level of audience pull as Dune: Part Three.
By releasing on December 25th, Jumanji avoids directly competing with the opening weekends of Avengers and Dune. This gives fans of those films a chance to see them first, then check out Jumanji the following week. Plus, Jumanji appeals to families, potentially attracting viewers who aren’t interested in superhero or science fiction action.
Naturally, Jumanji is aiming to benefit from the boost in moviegoers that theaters usually see over the Christmas holiday weekend. Although Dune and Avengers are also expected to perform well, this weekend offers the best opportunity for high ticket sales all year.
Sony made a smart move with its December movie releases. Instead of keeping Jumanji on its original date, the studio decided to delay it. This was a good decision because it allowed them to avoid competing directly with the highly anticipated releases of Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three, which could have hurt Jumanji‘s opening weekend numbers.
Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three are set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
Jumanji 3 is set to hit theaters on December 25, 2026.
