Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3: Who is Master Tengen explained

Okay, so in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, Master Tengen is finally getting some serious screen time! We’ve heard about him for ages – he’s basically a legend in the jujutsu world – but he’s always been this mysterious figure in the background. Now, it looks like he’s moving from just being part of the story’s history to actually being involved in what’s happening right now. It’s about time!

Megumi first brought up Tengen early in the story, and though he didn’t directly participate much, he was incredibly important during the Hidden Inventory Arc. The plan to merge Tengen with Riko Amanai caused major changes for several characters, even impacting Gojo’s future.

I first really noticed them during the Perfect Preparation arc. Yuji and the others were trying to figure out what the Prison Realm was all about, and what the Culling Game was really for. Just a heads-up, from this point on, I’m going to be talking about major spoilers!

Master Tengen’s role in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3

Master Tengen is a powerful, immortal jujutsu sorcerer who reveals a major secret in Season 3 – he uncovers who Kenjaku really is.

Tengen is an exceptionally rare and powerful sorcerer who has lived for centuries. He safeguards the jujutsu high schools with an incredibly strong barrier. Before cursed spirits became a major threat, Tengen was a young woman traveling across Japan and sharing Buddhist teachings – teachings that eventually formed the basis of the jujutsu sorcery we know today.

Tengen typically stays hidden in the Tombs of the Star Corridor, but becomes a key player when Kenjaku’s plan starts to come together. When Yuji and his friends ask why the Culling Game is happening, Tengen explains the real reason: Kenjaku wants to gather a huge amount of cursed energy so he can combine with an immortal sorcerer and completely change how the jujutsu world works.

Once Tengen finished explaining the rules of the dangerous game, Kenjaku immediately attacked. Even with Yuki and Choso trying to defend him, Tengen was thoroughly defeated, and Kenjaku took control of his physical form.

You can now watch Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 on Crunchyroll! The first two episodes are already out, and new ones will be released every Thursday at 9am Pacific Time.
