As a seasoned actress with a diverse and eclectic portfolio, I find myself often reflecting on the paths not taken in my career. One such instance is Judy Greer’s revelation about passing on the role of Claire Dunphy in “Modern Family”.
In a recent episode of the “Dinner’s on Me” podcast, Judy Greer disclosed that she chose not to pursue the part of Claire Dunphy in the popular series “Modern Family.
Greer informed Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who played Mitchell Pritchett on the popular ABC sitcom, that she had been asked to try out for the role of the Dunphy family matriarch. However, this part eventually went to Julie Bowen, who portrayed the character throughout its 11-season run and won two Primetime Emmys for her performance in the show.
Greer pointed out that during this stage of her acting career, she was taking on roles with children. “In films,” she explained, “these parts can be overlooked rather quickly. In television series though, it’s as if you become a mother – that’s your role.
Greer expressed that, in reality, she had no desire for children and it wasn’t something that was under consideration for her either.
She went on to say, “I found myself thinking, ‘I’m not sure I’ll try out for this role.’ I was deeply conflicted about the decision, but in the end, I chose not to. Whether I would have landed the part is uncertain, but at that moment, I wasn’t ready to be ‘America’s mom.’
At that point in her life, Greer expressed dissatisfaction with the role, finding it restrictive compared to her existing activities. She also mentioned that it’s not just about the actor’s image, but also the lifestyle. In essence, she enjoys traveling, making films, exploring various locations, and meeting diverse people, which this role might not allow.
Even though Greer declined the main part in “Modern Family”, she still made an appearance on the show’s first season, playing Denise, Phil Dunphy’s former girlfriend, portrayed by Ty Burrell. Additionally, Greer was the star of Bree Marie Jensen in “Reboot”, a brief series created by the co-creator of “Modern Family”, Steven Levitan and shown on Hulu.
