Jude Law Thriller ‘The Order’ Scared Distributors but Will Not Suffer Trumpian Zeitgeist in U.S. Release, Producer Stuart Ford Says

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the intricacies of film, I find myself deeply invested in the journey of “The Order.” Having lived through the tumultuous political landscape of recent years, I can appreciate the challenges Stuart Ford and his team have faced in bringing this powerful thriller to the screen.

The Jude Law-led thriller, “The Order,” set to premiere in the U.S. next week, hasn’t been an effortless pitch in the prevailing political climate influenced by President Trump.

The movie directed by Justin Kurzel, where Law portrays an FBI agent battling white supremacist terrorists in 1980s Idaho, symbolizes the current cautiousness of U.S. buyers towards such films, especially those with politically charged themes.

At a recent event in Morocco’s Marrakech Film Festival, “The Order” producer Stuart Ford mentioned that when they were trying to sell the movie before its Venice debut, some distributors appeared apprehensive because the film’s theme might be seen as divisive based on Red State and Blue State viewpoints.

Ford, head of AGC Studios, a well-known independent studio, stated that our opinion on the film might have been excessively cautious. However, it’s important to note that this perspective did play a role.

In 1983, I found myself immersed in “The Order”, a gripping tale that unfolds in the heart of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. As a film enthusiast with an eye for realistic drama, this movie resonated deeply. I, as an FBI agent, am thrust into a world of escalating bank robberies and car heists, each one more violent than the last. What starts as a seemingly routine investigation, soon reveals itself to be the handiwork of a ruthless gang of domestic neo-Nazi white supremacist terrorists.

Ford stated confidently that “The Order” aligns perfectly with the spirit of the Trump era. Regrettably, the significance of the movie is self-explanatory, as he pointed out.

The producer disclosed that prior to selling the U.S. distribution rights and afterward, when we had a U.S. distribution partner, there was much discussion: Should we release the film before the election or after the election?, he explained.

As a film enthusiast, I always choose what feels most fitting for the movie, considering its competitive aspect. The past events have no bearing on the reality of the film, whether it makes sense or not, in my opinion.

Starting December 6, Vertical is planning to launch “The Order” on approximately 600-700 screens across the United States, whereas Amazon, who holds majority international rights, will unveil the movie in the UK on December 27.

Ford believes that “The Order” won’t stir up controversy in the U.S., as he feels there aren’t any feathers left to ruffle following the post-election chaos. He also commented that the movie is excellent, delivering well as a classic crime thriller and a piece of polemic, if you will. Ford further stated that it has all the elements necessary for a powerful independent release towards the end of the year.

Currently, the challenging independent film market in the U.S. is evident, as shown by the fact that despite having no political implications, another movie starring Jude Law produced by AGC, titled “Eden” directed by Ron Howard, remains undistributed. However, producer Brian Ford has expressed optimism about finalizing a distribution deal for “Eden” in the near future.
